Food & Beverage News: Insights, Safety, and Dining Trends

Key takeaways
  • Whimstay targets last-minute travelers by offering discounted short-term rentals, often around 30% off typical prices.
  • Hands-on service with dedicated account managers, strong fraud protection, and proactive listing optimization for hosts.
  • Low fees and growth: transparent 5% platform fee and rapid expansion with listings and bookings surging in major cities.

Whimstay is a dedicated vacation platform for short term rentals that offers discounted, last-minute bookings for professionally managed properties. It caters to what co-founder Alex Alioto calls “the next‑generation traveler.”

“We focus specifically on last-minute bookings, helping hosts fill unsold gap nights,” Alioto says. “For travelers who are open to spontaneity, that means access to vacation rentals at about 30% off typical Airbnb prices if they’re willing to book last-minute. That’s the model. We’re not reinventing the wheel — it’s similar to Nordstrom Rack, grocery outlet stores, or other concepts that sell inventory at a discount.”

The Rise of the Spontaneous Traveler

According to Alioto, booking windows are shrinking as Millennials and Gen Z emerge as the dominant travel demographic. “People in this audience tend to be more spontaneous. They already love short term rentals, and with the rise of hybrid work, many can work from anywhere, just not necessarily from their own home. All of those factors create a specific kind of demand.”

Alioto says co-founder Ben Jamshahi proposed a “Hotel Tonight-style” product for short term rentals around 2019, after noticing factors that could help dominate this niche market.

“For example, someone in San Francisco might decide on a Thursday to spend a week in Palm Springs starting Monday, and there’s a real market for that kind of last-minute travel,” he says. “Airbnb tends to work best for bookings made 30 to 90 days in advance, while Vrbo often caters to longer planning windows of 90 to 180 days. But who serves travelers booking within 30 days? That gap sparked the idea.”

Demands for short term rentals surged during and immediately after COVID-19; travelers wanted privacy. “You didn’t have to share a hotel lobby or navigate crowded common areas; you could stay in your own space. That drove a massive spike in bookings.”

As demand increased, supply rose alongside it. “People saw the opportunity and started buying second homes specifically to turn them into short term rentals, in some cases before even buying a primary residence. The market expanded fast.”

Building a Hands-On Short Term Rental Platform

One advantage of a smaller company built for short term rentals is more hands-on customer service. Every host who signs up with Whimstay gets direct access to a real person on their customer service team, and property managers have a dedicated account manager.

“That level of access allows us to be proactive, not just reactive,” Alito says. “Our customer service team is very strong at resolving issues and making things right when they arise. That said, we don’t encounter serious problems often. We simply don’t see many “‘bad apples.’”

Whimstay’s customer service and account management teams focus heavily on optimization, making sure listings are positioned to perform well. That includes reviewing discounts to ensure last-minute pricing is competitive, checking that photos are strong and properly ordered, and identifying any inconsistencies or issues that could hurt performance.

“On the traveler side, there are occasional fraud attempts, but we have a stringent fraud-protection program in place to address that,” Alioto explains. “As for host performance, we’re not tolerant of consistently poor experiences. If a host creates problems for travelers, we act. Protecting the quality of the marketplace is non-negotiable.”

Once a host registers, Whimstay helps fill vacant dates with last-minute vacationers. The platform charges only a 5% fee and emphasizes transparent pricing with no hidden costs.

Finding Short Term Rentals for Your Last-Minute Getaways

In 2023, Whimstay listings doubled during a major growth phase, with bookings growing 400% from the previous year. Whimstay also has a growing market in urban areas such as New York, Atlanta, and Houston, with Chicago being the company’s fastest‑growing city.

For those planning their next getaway or have a spontaneous itch at any moment and want to stop overpaying for vacation rental,  here are some properties worth putting on your radar.
