The stage is set for one of the most anticipated matchups of the season as Savannah State baseball prepares to face Edwards Waters University in a rivalry series that has recently tilted in one direction, but there has been some signs of a shift in the rivalry.
Savannah State enters the series with a 16–14 record, while Edwards Waters holds a slight edge at 18–15. Looking at these records now, they do not matter when these two teams step on the field together.
Since 2024, Edwards Waters has maintained a firm grip on the rivalry. Savannah State went winless in that regular season series, dropping all three games. The struggles continued into the conference tournament, where Savannah State fell twice again to Edwards Waters, building more and more frustration.
However, 2025 marked a turning point. While Savannah State once again lost the regular season series, they managed to break through with a win, signaling progress. That momentum carried into the postseason, where Savannah State secured another victory over Edwards Waters, knocking them out in the conference tournament; players and coaches viewed that as a breakthrough moment for the Tigers.
“This rivalry has been one sided recently,” said Head Coach Tino Burgos. “But last year, we proved to ourselves that we can always compete with them. That changes the mindset coming into this series.”
Senior outfielder Chandler Hicks said, “Every time we play them, it feels bigger than just another series. Those wins last season showed we’re closing the gap and getting over the hump.”
As both teams prepare to clash once again, it’s clear Edward Waters still has the upper hand, but Savannah State is pushing that narrative in the other direction.
Infielder Kj Clarington stated, “I love playing Edwards Waters, the energy both teams bring and the fans as well just makes you also step your game up when playing as well.”
Head Pitching Coach Enrico Peele said, “We’ve always had some struggles in the past with Edward Waters, before Coach Burgos even arrived here. I’m really excited to see how this series goes; I know it’s going to be a good one.”
First game of the series is Friday, April 10, at 3:00p.m., and there will be a double header (DH) Saturday, April 11, starting at 1:00p.m.
