Faith & Reflection: Voices from the Black Church and Beyond

Key takeaways
  • Gratitude for parents' courage in parenting highlights the importance of presence over perfection.
  • Lessons from flaws and human experience can teach more than seeking perfection ever could.
  • Understanding the love that motivates parents to show up is crucial for personal growth.
  • Prayer for those who feel abandoned emphasizes the need for spiritual connections and healing.
  • Encouragement to remember Jesus' love fosters hope and persistence in challenging times.

Sometimes, a television show can touch your heart in unexpected ways. For me, it’s Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court. Every time I watch, my heart aches for those longing to know who their father is. Some are seeking answers to fill in the missing pieces of their identity. Others are searching for closure they’ve never had. And every time, I’m reminded of the priceless gift I’ve been given—the blessing of knowing both my mother and father.

I am so deeply grateful for the courage they showed in parenting. They allowed me, my brother, and my sister to see not only their strengths, but also their weaknesses and flaws. They didn’t hide their humanity from us, and in doing so, they taught us lessons that perfection could never teach.

They weren’t perfect, but they were present. And being present was more valuable than anything else. They stood in the gap for us, even when we complained like children who had no idea what it truly took to raise a family.

Looking back now, I see the love it took to keep showing up—to keep listening, guiding, and sacrificing. I thank God for the strength He gave them to stay, even when life was far from easy. I thank Jesus for showing me His heart through their presence. And I thank the Holy Spirit for helping me understand that their flaws never canceled out their love.

Not everyone gets that gift, and that breaks my heart. That’s why I will continue to pray for those who long to know their parents, for those who grew up feeling abandoned, and for those who are still searching for their place in the story of their own lives.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the blessing of knowing my mother and father. Thank You for the gift of their presence in my life. For those who have never known this blessing, I pray You would surround them with the love of spiritual mothers and fathers, with friends who feel like family, and most of all—with Your own steadfast presence. Heal every wound of abandonment, and remind them that in You, they are fully known and fully loved. Amen.

Peace & Blessings,
