From Hollywood to Home: Black Voices in Entertainment

Key takeaways
  • Multi-hyphenate creative: Nzinga Imani acts, models, runs Shop NIMANI, and records music, redefining modern entertainment.
  • Brings authenticity to Angela while Nzinga Imani remains grounded; character is bolder than the woman behind it.
  • Plus-size modeling trailblazer; partnered with major brands and founded Shop NIMANI to empower full-figured women.
  • Returned to music with sultry single Drown, showcasing vocal range; resilient advocate breaking barriers and inspiring size diversity.

Nzinga Imani has entered the entertainment world with a force that’s impossible to ignore. Many viewers first met her as Angela on BET’s hit series Tyler Perry’s Sistas, where she plays the sharp‑tongued, fiercely loyal friend navigating the highs and lows of love, friendship, and self‑discovery among a tight-knit circle of single Black women.

Her presence extends into Zatima, the fan‑favorite spinoff, where she continues to peel back new layers of her character while tackling fresh personal and professional challenges. But acting is only one part of Imani’s expanding creative empire.

She is also a plus‑size model, fashion entrepreneur, and recording artist — a true multi‑hyphenate blazing her own trail.

Breaking Into Acting: A Pandemic Twist of Fate

Imani’s entry into the Tyler Perry universe happened in the most unexpected way — during the pandemic.

“I got a small role on All the Queen’s Men. Even though it was a small part, it was a great experience. My acting must have made a great impression on Tyler because he asked me to audition for a new show called Zatima. I auditioned and got the role of Angela in Sistas.”

That moment became the launchpad for her acting career — and audiences have been captivated ever since.

Angela vs. Nzinga: Two Women, Two Worlds

Fans adore Angela’s boldness, but Imani is quick to point out that the character is far more outspoken than she is in real life.

“I’m not the judgmental friend who’s going to tell you all about your man. Angela is wilder than me in relationships. I’m a one‑man woman, while Angela likes to experiment more.”

Still, she infuses the role with her own authenticity and old‑school values, grounding Angela in a way that makes her both entertaining and deeply relatable.

Modeling: A Career She Never Planned — But Perfected

Before acting took center stage, Imani was already making waves in the fashion world. She has modeled for major brands including Ashley Stewart, Fashion to Figure, FILA, Fashion Nova, and Lane Bryant. She’s also the CEO of her own clothing line, Shop NIMANI, a brand dedicated to empowering full‑figured women with style, confidence, and unapologetic flair.

Her modeling journey began almost by accident:

“It wasn’t in my plan to be a model. I was a preschool teacher at the time and would go to this certain store often. When the company did a nationwide event on social media, they told me to tag a brand involved. Next thing I know, I was in a competition I didn’t even realize I was entering.”

That unexpected moment opened the door to paid campaigns, travel, and collaborations with designers — but the path wasn’t always smooth.

“There are always naysayers and people who don’t know how to dress you as a plus‑size person. I’ve had to bring my own clothing because options were limited. I’ve had people treat me unkindly at award shows, security acting like I wasn’t supposed to sit where I was assigned. Even on sets, people make comments without thinking about how it affects you. At the end of the day, I have pretty thick skin.”

Her resilience — and refusal to shrink herself — has made her a standout in an industry still learning how to embrace size diversity.

Returning to Her First Love: Music

While acting and modeling have brought her into the spotlight, music has always been Imani’s foundation.

Her latest single, “Drown,” showcases her sultry vocals and bold confidence. The track is sensual, vibrant, and irresistibly catchy — paired with a video that celebrates her curves, charisma, and creative freedom.

“Singing was my first love. It got put on the backburner because acting doors were opening. But with the right support, I felt it was time to jump back into it. Drown was perfect — sexy, fun, flirty. People know me for that because of my character on Zatima. I don’t limit myself to one genre because I want to show more of myself to the world.”

Her musical influences — from Beyoncé to Whitney Houston to Idina Menzel — reflect her desire to remain versatile, dynamic, and unboxed.

A Trailblazer in Every Lane

Whether she’s acting, modeling, or singing, Nzinga Imani is committed to breaking barriers and showing the world the power of authenticity. She continues to expand her reach, inspire women of all sizes, and redefine what it means to be a modern multi‑hyphenate artist.

Catch her in Season 4 of Zatima every Wednesday on BET, and stream her single “Drown” — a track that proves she’s only just getting started.

Remember, you heard it here first.
