Tomorrow’s Tech, Today: Innovation That Moves Us Forward

Key takeaways
  • XChat launched April 24 with iOS 26 Liquid Glass design and multiple selectable XChat icons.
  • Supports light and dark mode, plus settings to manage messaging permissions and swipe actions on chats.
  • Built specifically for messaging on the X network, so users can send and read messages without opening the main app.
  • Conversations are end-to-end encrypted, designed to keep messages private from prying eyes.
  • X rolled out XChat after a beta and will retire X Communities on May 6.

XChat, the chat function of the X social network, spun out into its own app, is now available for download for the iPhone and iPad. The free app can be picked up from the App Store.

The new app launched on Friday, April 24 and features an iOS 26 Liquid Glass design as well as a number of different XChat icons that can be chosen.

Alongside Liquid Glass, the XChat app also supports light and dark mode, and users can manage their messaging permissions and what happens when they swipe on a chat right from within the app’s settings page.

As for what you can use the XChat app for, it’s pretty much what it sounds like. You’ll be able to chat with anyone on the X social network using an app that is built for the task.

That means you won’t have to dive into the X app just to send and read messages. Notably, messages are end-to-end encrypted, so they should be kept safe from prying eyes.

Alongside the decision to roll XChat out to the masses after a beta program, X also chose to deprecate the X Communities feature. It’ll officially go the way of the dodo on May 6, so you still have a little while to use that feature before it’s gone for good.
