Chatham County Parks & Recreation Department is seeking community input to help guide the development of a new, site-specific master plan for Lake Mayer Community Park. Located at 1850 East Montgomery Crossroads between Sallie Mood Drive and the Truman Parkway, the 75-acre park opened in 1972 and serves as a major community hub for recreation.

Key takeaways
  • Public survey by Chatham County Parks & Recreation to evaluate Lake Mayer Community Park use and desired programs, amenities, and improvements.
  • Community feedback will guide updates to the 2011 plan, ensuring priorities match current needs and future growth, said Holly Holdsworth.
  • Master Plan update will take about three months; first funded improvements hoped completed by end of 2027; survey open through May 1, 2026.

To gather valuable feedback for the master plan, the department has launched a public survey. This survey aims to evaluate how the park is currently used and identify programs, amenities, and improvements the community desires.

“Lake Mayer Community Park is one of our most used parks and so well loved by the community,” said Holly Holdsworth, Chatham County Parks and Recreation Deputy Director. “We want to make sure future projects meet community needs and having feedback creates buy-in from residents and improves Chatham County officials, leadership staff, and Parks and Recreation staff’s decision-making quality.”

Community feedback will play a key role in shaping enhancements that address current needs and future growth, Holdsworth said. The last park plan was developed in 2011, and many changes have occurred since then.

“Some of those priorities (from the 2011 plan) are still relevant, however some of them may have changed, and we want to make sure we get the next phase of improvements completed well to the community’s growing needs,” she said.

Along with a 35-acre lake, existing amenities include a paved walking and jogging path, community center, picnic pavilions, restrooms, playground, and facilities for baseball, basketball, pickleball, tennis, and skating.

Holdsworth said the Master Plan update process will take about three months, with work on projects that are currently funded starting shortly before planning efforts in funding future projects begin.

“Depending on the final plan and scope of projects to be completed first, we hope to see the first set of improvements from this plan completed by the end of 2027,” Holdsworth said.

Community members can take the survey through May 1, 2026.
