Sharing fun activities with the people you care about can really enrich your life. However, there are days when your social battery feels low, and you need time to recharge. Or, sometimes, friends are unavailable, and you have no choice but to spend a few hours alone.

Spending time by yourself isn’t a bad thing. In fact, when you have alone time, you can go with your own flow and spend the day however you want, rather than compromising on what to do when hanging out with friends. Spending time alone can help you learn how to be comfortable and happy in your own skin and become more independent.

Here are six great ways to get out and enjoy some solo adventures!

Explore The Outdoors

Whether you take a walk in your local park or embark on a more ambitious hike, taking time to enjoy the outdoors has multiple benefits. Studies have shown that exploring the outdoors can improve physical health, reduce stress, and even increase happiness. In addition, living near or in green spaces can extend your life expectancy and boost your mental health.

Besides this, being in nature and seeing its beauty can promote feelings of awe, giving you a mental boost. So, take the opportunity to get your mind back into gear with a solid dose of the great outdoors.

Catch a Movie

A crowded movie theater is not what most people would consider a place of solitude. Yet doesn’t an entertaining film feel like the cinematic storyteller is talking to you personally? Despite being surrounded by an auditorium filled with strangers, each film viewer is on an individual journey of wonder and emotion.

A big advantage of solo moviegoing is that you can choose films that fit your tastes. As much as we love our family and friends, we don’t always like the same kinds of movies. Rather than reluctantly passing up a film your companions don’t prefer, get out to the theater, buy that single seat, and watch that movie you’ve been dying to see.

Visit a Local Café

The idea of eating alone in a restaurant feels uncomfortable to many. However, solo diners are not unusual at all. Cafes are often one of the best places to visit by yourself since they tend to be more casual, and you don’t have to commit to a multi-course meal. Instead, you can snack on a pastry or two with a cup of coffee (or tea) to sip at your own pace. 

You’ll also have time to decompress and process life without interruption or the necessity to carry on a conversation with a dining companion. This will give you a chance to sit back and reflect on life in a way that engaging with other people does not. You can also take time to quietly write in a journal, read a book, or scroll through your smartphone. You could do the same at home, but the bustling café setting often feels more stimulating yet relaxing since you’re outside your usual day-to-day surroundings.

Get Out into the Garden

Gardening is not only good for the mind but also for the body. Research has shown that gardening helps to reduce and prevent both anxiety and depression by offering a therapeutic and calming experience. In focusing on how to keep your plants thriving, you’ll be learning new skills and growing your own flowers or crops in no time.

Gardening can also help with physical activity, just as much as it is a mental activity. For example, digging and weeding help burn calories, helping create a healthy, active lifestyle without much strain on the muscles or joints.

Take Up Photography

Photography as a hobby can be very inspiring and relaxing. When looking through the camera lens, you’re literally seeing the world through a whole different perspective. You’ll discover new angles and innovative ways to capture the beauty of the world as you see it.

Getting into photography doesn’t require significant equipment investments. You don’t even need a traditional camera to get started; your smartphone will do just fine. You might eventually want to upgrade to a stand-alone camera, but you don’t need an expensive one to begin learning the techniques and capturing engaging pictures. Visit your local camera store and ask for an experienced salesperson to steer you to the right equipment.

Enroll in a Class

Whether signing up for painting, writing, photography, or even drawing, enrolling in a class is an excellent way to spend your time. It’s essential to keep the brain active as you grow older. Learning new skills can improve your memory by maintaining brain cells and making sure they communicate properly with one another. Much like a muscle, the mind also needs to be exercised regularly to keep fit and strong.

Learning something new will also give you an emotional boost! The confidence to learn something new is a great way to increase your self-esteem and sense of independence.

So, step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. You’ll never know what you’re missing out on, and you might even meet new friends while you’re there!
