Tomorrow’s Tech, Today: Innovation That Moves Us Forward

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable phone as soon as next year, and now a new report claims that the company will be able to fix one known foldable issue, the crease.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that both Apple and Samsung will use a new laser-drilled metal display plate from South Korean company Fine M-Tec.

The plate will be used in the foldable iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, the analyst claims.

On July 17, 2025, Fine M-Tec announced an investment of approximately KRW 17.5 billion to support the growing foldable device market and increased demand for ultra-precision laser processing capacity. The investment period spans from July 17, 2025, to January 20, 2027.

Modern foldable phones have the smallest crease we’ve seen so far, but it is still very much there if you look for it. It’s thought that the switch to this new component will allow for the first crease-free display to be used.

Kuo also believes that it’s Apple’s decision to ensure that there is no crease will drive the foldable market forward, hence Samsung’s decision to also follow suit.

Apple is said to be aiming to launch the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026 with a 7.8-inch inner display. The outer display is thought to be a 5.5-inch one while two rear cameras will be offered. Touch ID will be built into the power button, while Face ID will not be present.
