  • Pilot Club of the Halifax Area sponsors B-CU’s new Compass Club, offering guidance for members’ “friendship and service.”
  • Jairus Brown serves as the club’s school advisor, supporting student leadership and activities.
  • Sixteen members were inducted, including President Sophia Casseus and President-Elect Zadariya Shanks.
  • Compass Clubs (ages 18–26) promote community service, leadership development, and pathways to Pilot International membership.

History was made Monday, Oct. 13, when Bethune-Cookman University hosted the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ Compass Club Chapter in the United States, the club announced in a recent press release.

The Pilot Club of the Halifax Area will serve as its sponsor, providing guidance as the new Compass Club members begin their journey of “friendship and service.”

B-CU Freshman Support Specialist Jairus Brown will serve as the club’s school advisor.

During the charter ceremony, 16 members were inducted: President Sophia Casseus; President-Elect Zadariya Shanks; Secretary Joshua Rubens; Treasurer Mila Bostik; Qwesi Allen; Kiyona Bailey; Madison Brown; Shakira Brown; Tamia Boseman; Soleil Derisma; George Fields; Tazhanae Johnson; Sophia Levasseur; Obria Walker; Tye’lor Waters; and Mikah Williams.

The new members have already demonstrated their passion for community involvement by participating in B-CU’s community food distribution program, according to a release from the Pilot Club, and they are currently planning future activities.

The Compass Club of Halifax is a member of Pilot International. Compass Clubs are aimed at young adults ages 18 to 26, providing them an opportunity to become “a valuable part of their community. Members serve as volunteers in community service projects, develop leadership skills and advance personal and professional goals,” according to the press release.

Compass Clubs also provide a “stepping-stone for members to advance to full membership in Pilot International.” Learn more at compassclubintl.org.

In other Pilot Club of the Halifax Area news, the club honored Shirley Pyle for her 35 years with the organization. President Elissa Thomas presented Pyle with an award Tuesday, Oct. 7, during the club’s Founders Day program.

The program celebrated “42 years since the Pilot Club of the Halifax Area received its charter in 1983, plus the 104 years of friendship and service of Pilot International since its beginning in 1921,” the press release stated.

The Pilot Club of the Halifax Area “strives to influence positive change in communities.” The club specifically focuses on: “preparing youth and young adults for service; encouraging brain safety and health; and supporting those who care for others.”
