    Savannah, GA – 9/16/2025— The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce a historic milestone in its 293-year legacy. Sheriff Richard Coleman has appointed McArthur Holmes as the First African American Chief Deputy in the agency’s nearly three centuries of existence.

    Founded in 1732, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is the oldest sheriff’s office in the State of Georgia and one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the United States.
