City of Savannah Opening Cooling Facilities Amid Weekend Extreme Heat
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities due to extreme heat this weekend.
What to Know:
- Saturday and Sunday will bring warmer temperatures
- Heat advisory in effect Saturday, July 18, Noon – 8:00pm; Similar conditions expected for Sunday, July 19
- Heat index values 106 – 110 degrees expected
- Coastal South Carolina/Georgia Corridor
- Elevated temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses
What to Do:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends:
- Drink plenty of fluids; avoid energy drinks and alcohol; refrain from direct exposure to the sun; and tend to relatives and neighbors.
- Never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Move to a cool and shaded location if overcome by heat, as heat stroke and heat exhaustion are emergencies. Know the signs, symptoms, and when to call 911.
