  • Maurice Allen leads a long drive clinic sharing power techniques, tips, and inspiration for golfers of all skill levels.
  • Celebrates Cobbs Creek history and revitalization; Lincoln Financial Center offers year-round instruction, community programs, giveaways, and snacks from Little Horse Tavern.

Philadelphia’s historic Cobbs Creek Golf Course is ready to welcome the community for a day of fun, golf, and celebration as the Cobbs Creek Foundation hosts Community Day on Saturday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek, located at 7403 Lansdowne Avenue in Philadelphia.

The event will serve as a festive kickoff to the summer season while giving visitors an opportunity to experience the exciting new facilities and programs that are helping to transform one of America’s most storied public golf destinations.

Community Day promises something for everyone, from seasoned golfers to families and first-time visitors. Guests will be able to enjoy complimentary access to the state-of-the-art Toptracer driving range, where they can practice their swings and experience interactive golf technology in a fun and engaging environment.

One of the day’s highlights will be a special long drive clinic led by Maurice Allen, one of golf’s most dynamic personalities and one of the sport’s premier long-drive competitors. Allen, known for his tremendous power and engaging teaching style, will share tips and techniques to help participants improve their games while offering inspiration to golfers of all skill levels.

Attendees can also test their own abilities in a closest-to-the-pin challenge, always a crowd favorite, or enjoy a round on the Q School, the beautifully designed nine-hole short course located on the Cobbs Creek property. The short course provides an ideal setting for players of all ages and abilities to experience the game in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Beyond the golf activities, guests can enjoy complimentary snacks provided by Little Horse Tavern, the restaurant and bar located inside the Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek. Giveaways, including T-shirts and caps, will add to the festive atmosphere.

The event also offers an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable revitalization of Cobbs Creek Golf Course, a site deeply rooted in both golf history and African American heritage. Originally opened in 1916, Cobbs Creek has long been regarded as one of the nation’s most significant municipal golf facilities. Designed by famed architect Hugh Wilson, who also designed Merion Golf Club’s East Course, Cobbs Creek quickly became one of Philadelphia’s premier public courses.

For generations, Cobbs Creek has served as an important gateway to golf, especially for African American players who often faced exclusion from private clubs and many public facilities during the era of segregation. The course became a vital center of Black golf culture in Philadelphia and helped nurture generations of players, including future champions, community leaders, and trailblazers.

Today, the Cobbs Creek Foundation is carrying that legacy forward through an ambitious restoration and redevelopment project that combines historic preservation with innovative programming. The Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek serves as a cornerstone of that vision, offering year-round golf instruction, community engagement, educational opportunities, and expanded access to the game.

Community Day reflects the Foundation’s commitment to making Cobbs Creek a welcoming and inclusive destination for all. It is an invitation for the public to explore the new facilities, enjoy the game, and become part of the next chapter in Cobbs Creek’s remarkable story.

With golf, food, prizes, and family-friendly activities, Community Day promises to be a memorable celebration of sport, community, and the enduring spirit of one of America’s great public golf treasures. For more information about the Cobbs Creek Foundation, go to cobbscreekgolf.org.
