Imagine sipping agua mango fresca on a hot summer day, where the mango is sweet and creamy, the coconut water adds a tropical finish, and the lime juice keeps every sip bright. The beauty of agua fresca mango is that it tastes fresh and fruity without being as thick as a smoothie or as heavy as juice. It’s smooth, cold, and refreshing, with just enough sweetness to let the mango shine.

Aguas frescas have been part of Mexican culture for centuries, with roots going back to when the Aztecs mashed fruit with water for refreshment during market travels.

You may see this refreshing drink called mango agua fresca, agua fresca mango, or agua de mango fresca, but they all refer to the same thing: a light Mexican fruit drink made with ripe mangoes, water, and a touch of sweetness.

Today, agua fresca de mango is popular at Mexican street stalls, restaurants, markets, and homes, especially when fresh mangoes are in season. Mexico produces mangos in many regions, and from February through September, ripe mangoes show up in all kinds of refreshing drinks, desserts, and snacks.

This mango agua fresca recipe keeps the traditional idea simple while giving it a tropical twist by using coconut water instead of plain filtered water. You’ll make a quick simple syrup with sugar and coconut water, blend it with chopped mangoes until smooth, then strain it into a pitcher to remove extra pulp. Once the remaining coconut water and lime juice go in, you’ve got a cold, hydrating mango drink that’s ready in less than 10 minutes.

    Mango Agua Fresca Key Ingredients

Here are the key ingredients you need to make mango agua fresca at home.

    Ataulfo Mangoes

Ataulfo mangoes are my favorite for mango agua fresca because they are high in vitamin C, naturally sweet, creamy, and low in fiber. A ripe mango should smell sweet near the stem and give slightly when gently pressed. If you use a more fibrous mango like Tommy Atkins (red and green), strain the drink well after blending for a smoother finish.

    Coconut Water

Most agua fresca recipes use plain water, but coconut water adds a tropical flavor that pairs beautifully with mango and lime. It also makes the drink feel more refreshing, especially during hot summer months when you want something hydrating and light.

    Granulated Sugar

Sugar helps balance the lime juice and brings out the mango’s natural sweetness. Since ripe mangoes can vary in sweetness, make the simple syrup first, then taste and adjust the final pitcher before serving. Ripe mangoes may need less sugar, while less-sweet mangoes may need a little more.

    Lime Juice

Fresh lime brightens the pop of the sweet mango flavor, keeping it from tasting flat. It cuts through the mango’s sweetness, making the drink taste cleaner, fresher, and more refreshing.

    Ice

Mango agua fresca is best served over plenty of ice. The colder it is, the lighter and more refreshing it tastes, especially when served at cookouts, pool parties, or summer gatherings.

How to Make Mango Agua Fresca

This mango agua fresca comes together quickly; just remember to strain the blended mango mixture for a cleaner, lighter texture.

Heat a medium pot over medium heat. Add sugar and ½ cup coconut water, then cook until sugar dissolves, about 1-2 minutes. Set aside and let cool.

Add the simple syrup and mangos to a food blender, then blend on high for 30 seconds until completely smooth. Pour the mango juice through a fine-mesh strainer over a large pitcher, pressing with a spoon to remove any excess pulp. Stir in the remaining coconut water and lime juice, and taste and adjust sweetness as needed. Serve mango agua fresca in glasses filled with ice cubes and garnish with a lime wedge.

    Storing Leftover Agua Fresca

Mango agua fresca can be blended up to 2 hours in advance and stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but stir well before serving because the mango may settle at the bottom.

Freezing the finished drink is not necessary, but you can freeze leftover chopped mango in a freezer-safe bag for up to 6 months to use in future agua frescas or smoothies.

Pro Recipe Substitutions, Tips and Tricks

Here are my top tips for making the best agua de mango fresca every time.

    • Ataulfo mangoes are best for a smooth mango agua fresca because they are creamy, sweet, and low in fiber. Use ripe mangoes for the best flavor; they should smell sweet near the stem and give slightly when pressed.
    • Tommy Atkins mangoes can still be used, but they are more fibrous, so strain the mixture well after blending.
    • Mango season in Mexico typically runs from February to September, which is also when U.S. grocery stores usually have some of the best imported mangoes for agua fresca de mango.
    • Start with the simple syrup so the sugar dissolves completely instead of settling at the bottom of the pitcher.
    • Taste the drink before adding more sugar, as ripe mangoes provide natural sweetness and may not need much extra sugar.
    • If you are not a fan of coconut water, swap it for cold filtered water to keep the flavor more traditional.
    • Lime juice is optional in some agua frescas, but I love it here because it adds brightness and keeps the mango from tasting too sweet.
    • For an herb twist, use fresh mint or basil for a more sophisticated twist; mint keeps it cool and refreshing, while basil adds a light earthy note. You can also steep thyme and rosemary in the simple syrup for a more aromatic flavor.
    • For a sparkling mango agua fresca, replace some of the coconut water with club soda, sparkling mineral water, or ginger ale right before serving.
    • If mangoes are not in season, frozen mango chunks or mango puree will work.
    • If the drink tastes too thick, add more cold coconut water or filtered water until it makes a creamy mango agua fresca.
    • For a cocktail version, mix in 1-2 ounces of rum or tequila per serving.
    • You can replace the mango with strawberries, blueberries, oranges, peaches, watermelon, pineapple, or a combination of fruits to create another agua fresca flavor.
    • Blend the mango agua fresca up to 2 hours in advance and keep it chilled in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
    • Serve over plenty of ice and garnish with a lime wedge, mango slice, or mint sprig to make it look as refreshing as it tastes.
