Trevor Williams reports that a South Korean electric battery recycler is the latest clean-energy firm pulling back on investment plans for Georgia amid flagging demand for electric vehicles and the impending elimination of federal EV subsidies. SungEel Recycling Park Georgia LLC had planned to spend $37 million and hire more than 100 people at a facility in Toccoa.

Jerry Grillo reports, Ben Gillis will never forget the chilling phone call from his father, Hugh, the morning after Hurricane Helene blasted Georgia in September 2024. “He simply said, ‘Ben, it’s all gone.’ And those words hit a lot harder than the hurricane’s 100 mile-an-hour winds,” says Gillis, whose family lost 60% of the timber on their 15,000 acres in Soperton in one night of devastation.

Rahul Bali reports, more than 60% of this year’s one-time state income tax rebates have been sent out, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue. Individual tax filers are receiving $250, head of household filers $375 and married joint filers $500.

Staff reports that VT Industries announced that Ryan Clausen and Aaron Clausen have been named co-presidents, responsible for the company’s operating units across North America and all corporate functions. The company’s three divisions serve customers from 15 facilities in the U.S. and Canada, including its VTI of Georgia countertop manufacturing facility on Redmond Circle in Rome.

Wayne Ford reports that Firefly Trail Inc. announced Friday that a second federal and state grant has been awarded that will help finance the paved trail through a section of unincorporated Oglethorpe County. The new $2.9 million grant will assist in the construction of a 4.5 mile section from Maxeys to the Greene County line.

Buddy Carter, R-1, an announced candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2026, is giving up his chairmanship of a House subcommittee. “I am stepping down as chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health,” Carter wrote in a letter earlier this week to U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Amber Roldan reports that two Georgia Democrats are facing off to secure the party’s nomination for the District 3 seat on Georgia’s Public Service Commission. Keisha Sean Waites, a former state representative and Atlanta City Councilwoman, is competing against Peter Hubbard, a clean energy advocate, on the July 15 ballot. The runoff election comes after last month’s statewide special primary where no candidate received 50% of the vote, although Waites came close.

Greg Bluestein, Tia Mitchell, Patricia Murphy and Adam Beam report that the embattled New Georgia Project is downsizing again, raising questions about whether the left-leaning political organization founded by two-time gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will play a role in politics in next year’s midterm elections. The organization’s leaders sent notices cutting an unspecified number of employees on July 3, saying the “deeply painful decision follows an extensive and honest evaluation of the financial, operational, and structural challenges we have faced.”
