Former Daycare Worker Sentenced After Abusing Infant

Rachel Williams, a former employee of Steps to the Future DayCare and Learning Center, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Battery and four counts of Cruelty to Children in the First Degree.
The charges arose from an April 2024 incident in which a six-month-old child in Williams’ care suffered a skull fracture. According to court records, Williams forced the infant into a seated position and allowed the child to fall, causing repeated head injuries. Frustrated with the child’s inability to sit independently, Williams reportedly slapped the child on the face, arm, and leg and repeatedly yanked the child by the wrist, actions that led to the cruelty charges.
The case was investigated by Detective Katherine Ross of the Statesboro Police Department in coordination with DFCS and reviewed by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, the state agency overseeing daycare operations.
As part of her plea agreement, Williams was sentenced to 20 years, with 8 years to be served in state prison and the remaining 12 years on probation. She is also barred from employment in childcare. The state was represented by Assistant District Attorney Donna Black.
“This case underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in childcare settings,” DA Robert Busbee said in a statement. “We will continue to ensure that children are protected and that those who harm them are held responsible.”
