Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

A Curly Hair Smoothie is just what the doctor ordered for summer moisturized hair! While we embark on another hot summer, it’s time to get ready to find some amazing products that will give your strands all the TLC they  need to look and feel it’s best all summer long.  A hair smoothie can be created or bought so the options are there.

Natural Treatments to Stimulate Hair Regrowth

Now, don’t get me wrong by mentioning managing natural hair.  I hate that concept.  It implies that our hair is NATURALLY not manageable, but I understand that some Black women have been conditioned to think our hair needs massive amounts of time, money and products to care for it.  A hair smoothie is just a OTC or DIY internal hair smoothie is to allow your strands to stay moisturized and healthy.

Hair Smoothie

Simply put, a hair smoothie can be a styler, moisturizer, refresher, conditioner, and a defrizzer for your hair.  It’s primary focus is to hydrate, detangle, condition, and soften hair strands.  Since they can do varying things, it is crucial that you read the ingredients when buying one to see what it’s primary focus so you get exactly what you need out of it.  Our strands thrive off of moisture and while there must be a proper balance between moisture and protein, many new naturals find it difficult to know what to use when it comes to the moisture side of the scale.

Another thing to be confused about is whether you can simply eat your way to moisturized strands.  Yes, eating right will always aid in having gorgeous hair that is moisturized and happy, but knowing which products to use is still an important factor.  This is why a hair smoothie, whether you buy one or make one in your kitchen, is an asset in your natural hair arsenal.

By now we are going to assume you KNOW that the #1 moisturizer is water so always look for that being at the top of the list of ingredients in your hair smoothie.  No water, then assume it has another purpose than moisturizing your strands.  Also look for ingredients that allow slip.  Slip aids in detangling.  If you need some guidance on ingredients, check out my popular book, Natural Hair for Beginners: A Beginner’s Guide to Going Natural Successfully!  I have an entire section on ingredients.

While you can definitely purchase some ready-made hair smoothies you can also just eat some smoothies that are excellent at giving your hair what it needs for optimal health.

Ingredients
1-1 1/2 cup almond milk (plain or vanilla)
1 banana
1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
3 ice cubes
2-3 kale leaves (use 4 or 5 if you’re brave enough)
blueberries (optional)

Instructions
Add all ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.

Benefits
The kale is loaded with vitamins A and C which improve the flow of blood to the scalp to help with growth. The protein from the peanut butter and greens is to give nutrients to the building blocks of the hair. Also, the blueberries assist in UV protection, and healing damaged follicles. Not big on using fresh or even frozen veggies? opt for using a powder like KOYAH – Organic USA Grown Kale Powder.

A curly hair smoothie is a real asset to your natural hair.  Whether you use it as a styler, conditioner, refresher or internally, they will allow your strands to stay moisturized all summer long with proper usage.  Finding what works may take some trial and error (along with time) so make sure to keep receipts from purchases to return what doesn’t work, and write down your results to stay on top of the process.

Have fun this summer with moisturized strands that won’t frizz with great hair smoothies and remember protect your hair from the sun too!
