Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips
- Stop washing too often — wash weekly to preserve natural oils and prevent dryness.
- Use a real leave-in like Mielle Pomegranate & Honey applied to soaking wet hair for moisture and slip.
- Apply gel on wet hair — e.g., Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic locks in water for juicy definition without crunch.
- Protect styles overnight with satin tools (pillowcase, bonnet), pineapple or loose braids to maintain definition.
- Simplify: fewer, targeted products — cleanse, one leave-in, one gel — and listen to your hair.

I’ve been natural for 11 years and I still don’t know what I’m doing sometimes.
That’s the part they leave out.
They’ll give you a product list with 18 steps, 5 different gels, and a prayer, but they won’t tell you how it feels to go through yet another wash day and still end up with dry, flaky, undefined hair by Monday morning.
So I stopped chasing “perfect” curls and went looking for something better: moisture, softness, and curls that felt like mine, not theirs. Not TikTok’s. Not even YouTube’s. Just mine.
This is the routine that finally gave me back my hair. And it only has three products.
Step 1: I stopped stripping my scalp on Sundays
For real, I was doing too much. Every wash day felt like revenge. Stripping all the oils, resetting with more products, and wondering why my curls felt like hay by Wednesday.
Now I wash once a week with Bread Beauty Supply’s Hair Wash (sulfate-free, creamy, and smells like Sunday cake at Grandma’s).
And if I need a deeper clean? I reach for Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Rinse, it gets the buildup without snatching my soul (or my edges).

Step 2: I found a leave-in that actually moisturizes
Not all leave-ins are created equal. Some of them are just expensive lotion that sits on your curls and laughs.
But Mielle’s Pomegranate & Honey Leave-In?
She hydrates. She detangles. She respects your texture.
I apply her to soaking wet hair and let her sit for a minute like conditioner. That’s when my curls start waking up like, “Oh, we’re loved now?”
Step 3: I gel on wet hair. Still dripping.
This step right here?
It changed everything.
I used to towel dry first. Big mistake. Now I apply Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic right on top of my wet hair, and let it lock in the moisture like a seal.
It’s not a hard gel, it’s a juicy one. Like flaxseed vibes with slip and respect. Curls pop. Definition holds. And the crunch? Nowhere to be found.
Bonus: I protect the vibe when I sleep
If I moisturized, styled, and defined… I’m not about to ruin it with a rough pillowcase and 8 hours of cotton friction.
-
Satin everything: pillowcase, bonnet, even scrunchies
-
Pineapple puff or two loose braids
-
In the morning, I mist with aloe + distilled water. Sometimes I add a drop of leave-in. Sometimes I just let the curls be.
What Actually Worked
-
Washing less often.
-
Using fewer, but better, products.
-
Not trying to “fix” my hair. Just listening to it.
I didn’t end up with influencer-perfect curls.
I ended up with my curls, moisturized, soft, defined, and thriving.
That’s better than perfect.
FAQ’s
What is the simplest curly hair routine that actually works?
Cleanse weekly, apply a real leave in on soaking wet hair, then gel while still dripping. Fewer products, better results.
How often should I wash natural curls?
Once a week is enough for most. Add a gentle clarify only when buildup shows up.
What is pre poo and is it worth it?
It is an oil treatment before washing that reduces tangles and protects from moisture stress. If your wash day feels rough, it helps.
Which cleansers kept curls soft and clean?
Bread Beauty Supply Hair Wash for weekly cleans. Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Rinse when you need a deeper reset without dryness.
What leave in actually moisturizes curls?
Mielle Pomegranate and Honey Leave In hydrates, adds slip, and respects texture when applied to soaking wet hair.
Should I apply gel on wet or damp hair?
Wet. Apply Uncle Funkys Daughter Curly Magic on drenched hair to lock in water and boost clumping and shine.
Will Curly Magic make my hair crunchy or flaky?
No. It gives juicy definition with slip and a soft finish when layered over a true leave in.
How do I refresh curls in the morning without frizz?
Mist with aloe and distilled water, smooth in a drop of leave in if needed, then hands off and let it set.
How do I sleep without ruining my definition?
Use satin for pillowcase and bonnet, do a pineapple or two loose braids, and keep tension low.
Why are my curls still dry after wash day?
You might be stripping too hard, applying on damp instead of wet, or stacking too many stylers that block moisture.
How do I know if I am using too many products?
If hair feels coated, dull, or flakes appear, scale back to a cleanse plus one leave in plus one gel and evaluate.
What changes actually improved softness and retention?
Washing less often, moisturizing on soaking wet hair, using fewer targeted products, and listening to your scalp and ends.
