    Black Arts & Culture Feature:

    Key takeaways
    • Free screening series Black Feminist Shorts at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, showcasing filmmakers supported by Firelight Media exploring Black feminisms.
    • Four-day DC/DOX Documentary Film Festival in Washington, DC: over 100 premieres, filmmaker Q&As, ticketed screenings.
    • The Genesis Talks features Thelma Golden and Michael Govan discussing institutional leadership and curation at LACMA.

Whether you’re staying local, hosting guests, or planning a quick getaway, your art itinerary starts here. I’ve hand-picked these must-see Black art exhibitions and events to help you navigate the best of the U.S. art scene. This events guide is not a sponsored post, and I have no affiliation with the mentioned event organizers unless stated.

    • June 2 – Black on Screen: Black Feminist Shorts at Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture | Harlem, NYC | Free to attend

Black Feminist Shorts” is in partnership with Firelight Media, an organization that supports the creation, distribution, and impact of documentary media by and about communities of color. This event gathers contemporary filmmakers whose work experiments with Black feminisms and queer world building across generations and geographies.

    • June 4 – Where Being Takes Root: Works by Southern Artists | Atlanta, GA | Free to attend

Celebrating the lasting cultural influence of acclaimed artist, GSU professor emeritus and former Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Director Larry M. Walker (1935–2023), whose personal collection of over 300 works was gifted to the university following his death. Curated by Lauren Jackson Harris, the exhibition considers the South not merely as a geographic location but as a lived experience.

    • Now until June 6 – You’ve Had It In You All Along at Avery Barnes Gallery | Seattle, WA | Free to attend

Exhibition explores the resiliency and truth found within the feminine. Together, they represent an important lineage of visionaries whose life journeys, activism and vulnerability in self discovery within their practices have paved an enduring path for us all.

    • June 11 – Seeing Sounds: On Black Music & Visual Art | Houston, TX | Free to attend

An evening exploring the historical impact of Black music on the work of Black visual artists. This free program is the third in an ongoing series of (Black) art history-focused teach-ins and is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

    • June 11 – 14 – DC/DOX Documentary Film Festival | DC | Ticket Prices vary

Over four days, DC/DOX takes place in marquee venues across Washington, DC, presenting an exceptional lineup of 100+ feature and short documentaries from around the world. Every screening is a Washington, DC premiere and is followed by filmmaker Q&As and thought-provoking post-screening discussions. One of my personal favorite events to cover!

    • June 14 – The Artist’s Voice: Derrick Adams with Salamishah Tillet | Boston, MA | Free to attend

Hear from Adams to learn more about this and his ICA exhibition, Derrick Adams: View Master. Free admission to the exhibition for all ticket holders. Stick around after the talk for a book signing with Adams.

    • June 21 – The Genesis Talks: Thelma Golden, the Studio Museum in Harlem director and chief curator and Michael Govan at LACMA | Los Angeles, CA | $

The Genesis Talks brings together the Studio Museum in Harlem director and chief curator Thelma Golden and Michael Govan, who will discuss curatorial vision, institutional leadership, and the role of museums in shaping cultural narratives, exploring how exhibitions, institutions, and public engagement can respond to the urgencies of our time.

    • Newly opened – Sacred Seams by artist Kim Alexis Newton at Bruce R Watkins Cultural Center | Kansas City, MO | Free to attend
