Lady Blue Devils shut out Screven County, 6-0

Two teams off to strong starts met on the diamond Tuesday night as the Statesboro Blue Devils welcomed the Screven County Gamecocks to Mill Creek Park. With both teams entering the matchup having lost just twice this season, something had to give. Statesboro made sure it wasn’t them.

Behind a complete-game shutout from Hannah Pepe and a productive night from the Blue Devil lineup, Statesboro pulled away for a 6-0 victory over Screven County. Pepe went all seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six. At the plate, Ragan Fuller provided a spark with two extra-base hits and two RBIs as Statesboro steadily built its lead throughout the night.

Statesboro wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Kendall Horne put herself in scoring position by stealing third base before Kennedi Coty lined a double into right field to bring her home for the first run of the game.

Fuller followed with a double of her own, driving a hard ground ball into left field that allowed Coty to score and quickly gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage. With an early cushion to work with, Pepe kept Screven County off the board and gave the Statesboro offense plenty of time to add to its lead.

Fuller came through again in the bottom of the third inning.With Coty on base, Fuller lined a triple into right field to bring her home and extend Statesboro’s advantage to 3-0. It was Fuller’s second extra-base hit and second RBI of the game.

The Blue Devils continued to build their lead in the fourth. Aubree Brunson and Madison Holmes reached base before Horne delivered a two-run single into right field, scoring both runners and stretching the advantage to 5-0.

Statesboro added one final insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Horne came around to score on a passed ball, making it 6-0. Six runs were more than enough for Pepe. She went the distance in the circle, holding Screven County scoreless across seven innings. She scattered five hits and struck out six as the Blue Devils completed the shutout.

The Lady Devils improve to 9-2 on the season.

The Statesboro High Blue Devils will be back in action on Thursday, September 10. They will go on the road to take on Ware County. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
