Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Long County football team defeated Johnson, 28-7, on Aug. 28 to pick up its second win of the season at Savannah High Stadium.

Long County got on the board first thanks to a Johnson turnover. The Atom Smashers fumbled the opening kickoff and three plays later the Blue Tide held the lead. Jason Familia found Wesley Williams for the score and 6-0 lead after the missed PAT.

The score was still 6-0 early in the third quarter when Johnson responded. Quarterback Shamari King was able to get to the edge and cross the goal line to tie the game. Johnson took the lead, 7-6, after a successful PAT.

Long County took control of the game after losing the lead. The Blue Tied scored the final 21 points of the contest.

“We are who we are,” Long County head coach Michael Pfiester said. “We don’t need to try to be anything we’re not. We just need to be physical and run our stuff. Just do the things that we’re coached to do. That’s a battle for us sometimes, because some guys like to do what they want to do.”

“We got a little tired,” Johnson head coach Steven Smith said, “but we fought today. We fell down. We got back up. We just missed opportunities. We fought to the end. And that’s the type of football team I want to coach. I want to coach a team that don’t quit.”

Next up for Long County is a Sept. 5 home date with Groves. As for Johnson, they will travel to Islands on Sept. 5.
