Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

Long layovers have a reputation for being the ultimate travel buzzkill—the fluorescent purgatory between where you’ve been and where you’re headed. But if anyone knows how to turn that in-between stretch into something restorative, it’s a flight attendant. After 18 years in the air, Aura E. Martinez has learned that those hours don’t have to feel wasted. “I’ve had my share of long layovers,” she says. “And with the right mindset and essentials, they can actually become some of the most restorative and productive parts of the trip.”

For her, layovers double as built-in breathers: a slow walk through the terminal, a playlist break with her Bose noise-cancelling headphones, or time to jot down thoughts in her journal. And while mindset matters, preparation does too. “The secret to surviving a long layover is how you frame it and how well you prepare,” she says. “It’s not lost time, it’s your time.”

That’s where smart travel essentials come in—from staying hydrated with an Owala water bottle to keeping germs at bay with Purell hand sanitizer. Ahead, Aura shares the 10 items she relies on to make every layover smoother, calmer, and a little more enjoyable.

Best Flight Attendant-approved Long Layover Essentials

Owala FreeSip Insulated Water Bottle

Amazon

A long layover basically doubles as a hydration hazard, and Aura swears by keeping water within arm’s reach. “Hydration is non-negotiable, especially when you’re traveling through multiple time zones,” she says. “Most people may not realize how dehydrating being on the plane, especially for many hours, can be.” The Owala FreeSip is leakproof, easy to refill at airport water stations, and has a covered spout so you don’t have to stress about mystery germs making contact with your drink. Plus, skipping those overpriced water bottles sold at the terminal always feels like a win.

Nivea Skincare Set

Amazon

Between recycled cabin air and constant handwashing, everything—including lips and hands —gets drier in transit. Aura always carries a mini self-care kit and says, “I love Nivea hand cream, especially because I wash my hands a lot while on the plane.” This mini set covers the basics with a hand cream packed with almond oil and shea butter, plus a moisture lip balm to keep your skin from feeling tight halfway through your layover. It’s tiny, low-cost, and life-saving when the airport AC is at its peak.

Bagail 8-set Packing Cubes

Amazon

Aura says a big travel mistake for long layovers is “overpacking your carry-on: It’s tempting to bring ‘everything,’ but lugging around too much adds stress.” Packing cubes are a secret to keeping the chaos in check. The Bagail 8-set Packing Cubes give every item a designated spot, so you’re not tempted to panic-throw extras into your bag before heading to the airport. They also make digging for your hoodie or toiletries mid-layover a whole lot less annoying.

Bose QuietComfort Noise-canceling Headphones

Amazon

Layovers can be full-on sensory overload—crying babies, rolling suitcases, gate-change announcements every 12 seconds. Aura says “quiet time protects your energy,” and calls noise-canceling headphones a straight-up essential. This Bose pair is the gold standard, especially now that they’re a rare $200 off. They’re sleek, giftable, and padded enough to stay comfortable during a long airport camp-out. Slip them on, drown out the chaos, and reclaim your peace no matter where you’re stuck waiting.

Samsung 25W Battery Pack

Walmart

“A dead phone on a long layover is a recipe for stress,” Aura says. “You never know when the outlets on the plane or even at the airport may not work, so a portable charger or battery bank is a must.” She uses this Samsung power bank because it lasts ages, fully recharges her phone, and still has juice to top up other devices. It’s lightweight, reliable, and can charge multiple gadgets at once—exactly what you want when the only available outlet is mysteriously broken.

Bantu Essential Oil

Amazon

If your nerves spike or you get queasy in transit, Aura recommends building in calming rituals during your layover. “[I love] a calming essential oil like lavender—these little comforts make a big difference,” she says. Bantu’s roll-on oils are small enough to travel with and come in soothing blends like lavender, peppermint, citrus, and fresh herbal scents. A quick swipe on your wrists can help you decompress between flights or settle your stomach before boarding again.

TSFPapier Journal

Amazon

Aura journals between flights to “decompress, jot down reflections, or plan out my next content ideas,” and a layover is the perfect window to do the same. A physical journal becomes such a special keepsake—I still reread mine from studying abroad, and it instantly transports me back. This corduroy-covered option feels chic, travels well, and gives you a space to brain-dump, daydream, or map out your next adventure while you’re waiting at the gate.

Trendy Queen Zip-up Hoodie

Amazon

Airport temperatures are unpredictable, and Aura’s biggest advice is simple: “Bring layers. Air conditioning can change from gate to gate.” The Trendy Queen Zip-up Hoodie solves that issue, whether you’re freezing in one terminal or peeling off layers in another. It’s lightweight, wearable year-round, and looks polished enough for travel days.

Skechers Cleo Taylor Loafers

DSW

Comfortable shoes can make or break a travel day, and Aura doesn’t mess around. “One that I wear all the time, especially for the airport, are Skechers Women’s Loafers… you can walk for hours and not have tired feet,” she says. These loafers pair a chic suede finish with an air-cooled memory foam footbed and a slip-resistant sole—ideal for speed-walking across terminals or exploring during long layovers.

Purell 6-pack Hand Sanitizer

Amazon

With thousands of travelers passing through the same spaces, Aura always tucks hand sanitizer into her skincare kit. It’s essential when you’re touching everything from escalator rails to touchscreen kiosks. This Purell 6-pack provides mini bottles you can stash in your bag, pocket, or toiletry pouch so you never have to hunt one down mid-travel. A tiny layer of defense goes a long way when the airport is a germ-free-for-all.
