Massie Heritage Center Seeks Student and Teacher Alumni for Anniversary Celebration
Leaders at Massie Heritage Center, once Massie Elementary School (one of the earliest public schools in Georgia), are searching for its alumni and former teachers. We hope you can help with our search. While Massie has been closed as a public school since 1974, it is open as an active Heritage Center in downtown Historic Savannah. (207 East Gordon Street on Taylor Square). It occupies the original schoolhouse, designed by famed New York architect John Norris.
Massie will be celebrating the anniversary of the opening of the school in 1856 this Fall and wants to include as many of our former staff and schoolchildren (or their families) as possible in this event. We are looking forward to hearing their stories and looking at any memorabilia they might have to share.
The Massie Alumni Search Committee is headed by Stratton Leopold, Hollywood producer, director, and actor as well as owner of famed Leopold’s Ice Cream and former Massie student. Perhaps the promise of his ice cream will lure many to share their stories! Stratton, Gale Steves, Friends of Massie President, and Steven Smith, Massie Curator, are collaborating on this search.
