Tomorrow’s Tech, Today: Innovation That Moves Us Forward

    Key takeaways
    • OpenAI and Apple have a strained relationship amid disappointment over the outcomes of their Siri collaboration.
    • As part of the deal, ChatGPT operates as a backup across Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with subscriptions via Settings.
    • OpenAI expected heavier placement and far higher signups from the Apple integration than actually occurred.
    • OpenAI sought to renegotiate the revenue-sharing arrangement after returns fell short; the deal is now described internally as a failure.

OpenAI may be about to sue Apple over the deal that saw its ChatGPT AI used to bolster Siri as part of Apple Intelligence.

A new report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman suggests that the relationship between Apple and OpenAI has become “strained” amid disappointment that the Siri deal hasn’t been as lucrative as was first hoped.

The two companies agreed to work together as part of the Apple Intelligence launch in 2024, with ChatGPT used as a backup to Siri and across other AI features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. As part of the deal, ChatGPT users would be able to subscribe via the Settings app with Apple then taking a percentage of the revenue.

However, it’s reported that OpenAI expected that ChatGPT would be featured more heavily within Apple Intelligence, with executives believing Apple hasn’t promoted it enough. There are also concerns that the number of people signing up for ChatGPT as a result of Apple Intelligence hasn’t been as high as first hoped.

In fact, OpenAI had expected that ChatGPT’s integration into Apple Intelligence on the iPhone could have been worth billions of dollars annually. That hasn’t come to fruition, with the deal now described as a “failure.”

OpenAI has also reportedly attempted to renegotiate the deal, but nothing has been agreed. Now,  it’s thought that OpenAI is considering legal action over the deal.
