Global Black Voices: News from around the World

Gauteng residents are set for a hot Tuesday, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages. Pretoria is forecast to peak at 33°C, while Johannesburg is expected to reach 31°C.

Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi explained, “We expect very warm to hot conditions across much of Gauteng, especially in the northern areas where temperatures may feel extreme.”

    Runaway fire conditions

The South African Weather Service has issued alerts for runaway fire conditions across Gauteng, particularly in areas bordering Limpopo and the Northwest. The combination of heat, strong winds, and low humidity creates a perfect environment for fast-spreading fires.

“We are looking at wind speeds reaching 40 to 45 kilometres per hour in some areas, which could quickly fan any small fires,” Rasimphi warned.

Officials advise against open flames, outdoor burning, or leaving rubbish fires unattended. Rural communities remain especially vulnerable due to dry vegetation and limited firefighting resources.

    Safety precautions and warnings

Authorities urge residents to prepare for both health and safety risks, including staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat.

Minimum temperatures will remain relatively warm at night, with Johannesburg dropping only to 16°C and Pretoria to 18°C, offering little overnight relief.
