WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – On Monday the Supreme Court issued a ruling that allows President Donald Trump to continue dismantling the Department of Education.
About 1,400 Department of Education employees could be laid off as early as this week.
In a 6-3 ruling down ideological lines, the Supreme Court lifted an injunction that prevented the administration from moving forward with mass firings at the department.
The high court action now allows the administration to resume work on winding down the department, one of President Trump’s biggest campaign promises.
The task of shutting down the department falls largely to Education Secretary Linda McMahon.
Most of the Education Department employees affected by the ruling have been on paid leave since March, with their positions now likely to be eliminated soon.
Following the ruling, President Trump praised the decision saying the court, “has handed a major victory to parents and students across the country.”
Democrats say the decision will hurt students, especially those at high risk.
“What is happening is, without question, going to damage local communities as the funding that otherwise would be reaching cities and towns across the country, going to slow to a trickle That is their plan,” said Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.).
The department hasn’t said specifically when the positions will officially be eliminated.
