Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips
- Suited to both older daters with responsibilities and younger daters with short attention spans.
- Pick mildly competitive or collaborative activities like mini golf, bowling, trivia, or Uno to reveal behavior.
- Notice how they treat staff, interrupt, or hijack conversations to reveal supportive, controlling, or dismissive tendencies; seek patterns, not perfection.
- At the 45-minute mark, extend if there's real chemistry; if not, smile, say goodnight, and leave gracefully.
First dates need an expiration time.
Not because romance is dead, but because nobody should lose an entire Saturday discovering that a stranger’s only personality trait is gaining muscle.
Enter the 45-minute date: long enough to determine whether there’s chemistry, short enough to escape before they show you 12 pictures of themselves flexing in a toothpaste-stained mirror.
The beauty of the 45-minute date is that it works across generations. Older daters have responsibilities, lower-back pain, and no desire to waste three hours pretending to enjoy a conversation that died before the appetizers arrived. Younger daters have short attention spans and may have already mentally swiped left because you pronounced “meme” incorrectly.
The trick is choosing a date that reveals more than somebody’s coffee order.
Try mini golf, bowling, arcade games, trivia, or a fast card game. A little friendly competition can expose plenty. Do they laugh when they lose, or start blaming the equipment, the lighting, and childhood trauma? Do they celebrate your win, or suddenly explain why your victory “technically doesn’t count”? Are they playful—or acting like ESPN scouts are hiding behind the nacho machine?
Choose something mildly collaborative, like completing a small puzzle, browsing a bookstore and selecting books for each other, or creating ridiculous ice-cream combinations. You’ll quickly see whether they’re encouraging, controlling, curious, dismissive, or incapable of letting another human being have an idea.
Pay attention to the little things, too. How do they treat the staff? Do they interrupt every story with a better one? Can they ask questions without turning the conversation into a TED Talk about themselves? If you share an accomplishment, do they seem supportive—or immediately begin competing with a life event nobody asked about?
Of course, one petty round of Uno does not qualify you to diagnose narcissism. Maybe they’re nervous. Maybe that Draw Four reopened an old wound. Look for patterns, not perfection.
At the 45-minute mark, you have options.
If the chemistry is chemistrifying, extend the date. Grab food. Take a walk. Keep flirting responsibly.
If it isn’t?
Smile, say goodnight, and enjoy the evening they didn’t have enough time to ruin.
