Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

Key takeaways
  • Senate passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill praised as a major policy win for Americans: lower taxes, higher wages, secure borders.
  • House GOP must unite to send the bill to the president; internal conservative opposition and tight vote math threaten passage.
  • Article warns the bill could fracture; emphasizes elections' importance and staying together to defeat a Democrat-controlled Congress.

On Tuesday, not long after Senate passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, President Trump took to his Truth Social account to count coup. He did so in his inimitable style – but, as the saying goes, it ain’t over until the fat lady sings. She’s warming up in the wings – but she hasn’t heard her cue, not just yet. But that won’t stop the president from offering congratulations.

The president began by cheering on the passage of the bill through the Senate,

Almost all of our Great Republicans in the United States Senate have passed our “ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL.” It is no longer a “House Bill” or a “Senate Bill”. It is everyone’s Bill. There is so much to be proud of, and EVERYONE got a major Policy WIN — But, the Biggest Winner of them all will be the American People, who will have Permanently Lower Taxes, Higher Wages and Take Home Pay, Secure Borders, and a Stronger and More Powerful Military. Additionally, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security Benefits are not being cut, but are being STRENGTHENED and PROTECTED from the Radical and Destructive Democrats by eliminating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse from those Programs.

No cloud is without its silver lining, but in this case, it’s more like the silver lining has a cloud, and the president has no hesitation in mentioning that, either.

We can have all of this right now, but only if the House GOP UNITES, ignores its occasional “GRANDSTANDERS” (You know who you are!), and does the right thing, which is sending this Bill to my desk. We are on schedule — Let’s keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4thvacation. The American People need and deserve it. They sent us here to, GET IT DONE!

There is still quite a bit of work to be done if this bill is to make it to the president’s desk by the July 4th goal. Earlier on Tuesday, RedState’s own Joe Cunningham pointed out some pitfalls that may be awaiting the BBB in the House of Representatives:

Rep. Chip Roy and others demanded $2 trillion in mandatory spending cuts as their price for supporting the original House bill. The Senate version moves in the opposite direction, increasing long-term costs while providing less aggressive spending reforms.

The political math is brutal: House Republicans can only afford to lose four votes. If a handful of conservatives look at Collins, Tillis, and Paul voting “no” and decide the Senate version is fiscally irresponsible, Speaker Johnson has a serious problem. When your own party needs the Vice President to break a tie in the Senate, it’s hard to argue you have momentum going into House negotiations.

What does all this mean? This thing could still, very easily, come apart at the seams.

Agree with the BBB or not, this should serve as an object lesson for the importance of elections. The midterms will be here before we know it, and there are already rumbles on the internets, in places like X and in comments to news stories, of people threatening to sit out the midterms if they don’t get everything they want. That’s like trying to cause your neighbor pain by punching yourself repeatedly in the face. President Trump is right about one thing: This herd of cats has to stay together. We can’t have everything we want. But what we can have is better, leaps and bounds better, leagues better, than anything we would get from a Democrat-controlled Congress.

If we learn nothing else from the BBB, we should learn that.

Editor’s Note: The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject its globalist agenda.
