Patrice Motsepe became South Africa’s first Black billionaire in 2008, earning his fortune through mining—a sector once closed to Black entrepreneurs under apartheid. Today, his company, African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), operates across the continent, producing gold, platinum, coal, and ferrous metals.

Born in Soweto in 1962, Motsepe studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand and began his career during a time of seismic political transition. He founded ARM in 1997, just three years after South Africa’s first democratic elections.

By 2025, his estimated net worth is over $3.1 billion USD, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in Africa and one of its most respected business leaders.
