3 Ways To Spend A Weekend In Washington, D.C. Beyond The National Mall

For many visitors, a weekend in Washington, D.C. begins and ends with the National Mall. There are the monuments, the Smithsonian museums and, of course, the appeal of experiencing so much of the nation’s capital without spending a dime. But spend a little more time here, and it’s easy to see that D.C. is a city best experienced beyond its most recognizable landmarks.

Its neighborhoods each offer something different. In Adams Morgan, the streets stay lively well into the night, while U Street remains one of the city’s most recognizable corridors for Black culture, history, food, and nightlife. Georgetown has its own pace, with waterfront views, historic streets, and plenty of reasons to spend an afternoon with nowhere in particular to be. 

And while Washington has changed a lot over the last few decades, one thing that has never been erased is the influence Black Washington has had on the city. You can find it in the institutions preserving its history, the restaurants feeding generations of locals and visitors, and the neighborhoods and communities that continue to shape its culture.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or looking for a different way to spend a few days in the nation’s capital, these three weekend itineraries offer different sides of Washington, D.C. — from historic neighborhoods to Black culture and luxury near the waterfront.

A Historic Weekend In Woodley Park And Adams Morgan

There are plenty of ways to spend a weekend in Washington, D.C., but not all of them involve rushing from one reservation to another. During my stay at the Omni Shoreham, one of the things I appreciated most was having a reason to slow down. After spending time navigating the city, claiming a lounge chair by the hotel’s outdoor pool and doing absolutely nothing was exactly what I needed during my staycation.

The ability to wind down or get outside at a moment’s notice makes the Omni Shoreham interesting enough to anchor a D.C. weekend. The historic hotel has been part of the city for generations — since 1930 — but the experience feels anything but stuck in the past. You can spend an afternoon poolside, then walk over to Adams Morgan, where restaurants, bars, and nightclubs keep the neighborhood’s energy high well into the evening.

One of the more unexpected highlights of our stay came in place of the traditional weekend brunch. At Robert’s Restaurant & Terrace, we traded bottomless mimosas for Alice’s Tea Party, an Alice in Wonderland-inspired afternoon tea with tea sandwiches, sweets, and enough whimsy to take your mind off politics — even if only for a weekend. In a city where brunch has become a weekend sport, it’s a fun excuse to do something different.

A Weekend Of Black Culture, Food, And Luxury

Washington’s Black history is impossible to separate from the story of the city itself, and you don’t have to look far to find its influence. Neighborhoods have changed, businesses have come and gone, but spaces remain where generations of Washingtonians and visitors know they can find a good meal, great music, and a good time.

This itinerary makes The Potomac Hotel, Autograph Collection — formerly Salamander Washington D.C. — an interesting base for exploring the city’s culture. Dōgon, chef Kwame Onwuachi’s Afro-Caribbean restaurant, is one of the property’s biggest draws, while the spa presents a convenient excuse for a staycation or a slower afternoon without leaving the hotel.

From the property, make your way to U Street, where Black Washington’s past and present meet over mumbo-sauced wings, half-smokes, and late-night cocktails. Start with Oohh’s & Aahh’s, then stop at the legendary Ben’s Chili Bowl before getting into late-night stops along this famous street. The businesses may look different from those that defined the area decades ago, but U Street’s tradition as a gathering spot remains.

For first-time visitors, a trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture is essential to any D.C. stay. Give yourself several hours to take it in — you’ll need it —  before returning to the Wharf-adjacent property for a spa treatment, dinner at Dōgon, or a quiet evening at the hotel.

A Waterfront Weekend In Georgetown

Washington may be best known for its monuments, museums, and government buildings, but the Potomac offers another way to experience the city. You can’t exactly spend the afternoon swimming in it, but the river is a surprisingly big part of D.C.’s social life, particularly once you make your way to Georgetown.

For this weekend, make the new citizenM Washington, D.C. Georgetown your home base. The 230-room hotel opened in June 2026, bringing citizenM’s colorful, design-forward style to the neighborhood. Sitting just across from the Georgetown waterfront and steps from the C&O Canal, the location makes it easy to spend less time in a car and more time wandering.

Start your afternoon with a walk along the canal before making your way to M Street for shopping, coffee, and a little people-watching. For dinner, keep things local with Cottage House Ethiopian Cuisine, a family-owned Georgetown restaurant serving traditional Ethiopian dishes meant for sharing. 

The next day, take your weekend to the water. A private charter with Mahogany Yacht Charters offers a different perspective of the capital, with sightseeing and sunset cruises along the Potomac for groups of up to 10. Couples can opt for a smaller date-night charter, while groups can bring food and drinks aboard and make the cruise an afternoon or evening of its own.

Back on land, leave room for an unhurried afternoon in Georgetown. Walk the waterfront, explore the shops along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, or grab a drink overlooking the river before dinner.

This itinerary lets you experience D.C.’s newer, design-forward and more relaxed side. You won’t see every monument, but the rest of the city is worth making time for, too.
