For a long time, I felt stuck. SwagHer Magazine was still moving, but I wasn’t sure where it was going. I eventually realized that what I needed was an outside perspective in business—someone who could look at what I had built with fresh eyes and help me see the possibilities again.
That was a difficult realization for me because I have always had a vision for SwagHer. Even when I didn’t have the money, resources, or connections, I still believed it could become something bigger. But after years of building, surviving, and figuring things out as I went, I reached a point where I could no longer identify what “bigger” looked like.
Then I had the privilege of working with a consultant.
She reviewed my business, studied what I had already created, and sent me a plan outlining different ways the brand could grow. Almost immediately after reading it, ideas started pouring into my mind.
It was like someone had turned the lights back on.
What surprised me most was that some of the ideas in her plan were ideas I had already considered. They had crossed my mind before, but I didn’t know how to incorporate them into the business. I wasn’t sure where they belonged, whether they made sense, or whether I was thinking too far beyond my current reality.
But once I saw those ideas written down as part of an actual strategy, they felt possible.
They were no longer random thoughts floating around in my head. They had structure. They had purpose. They had a place within the bigger vision.
Seeing someone else recognize those possibilities helped me lock in on what I needed to do next.
We often hear that we should not wait for permission to pursue our ideas. We are told to believe in ourselves, trust our instincts, and stop looking to other people for validation. I agree with all of that.
But I also believe there are moments when reassurance is necessary.
Sometimes we need another person to look at what we have built and say, “Yes, this can become something greater.”
Sometimes we need someone with a fresh perspective to confirm that the ideas we have been quietly carrying are worth exploring.
That does not mean we are incapable of believing in ourselves. It does not mean we need someone else to approve every move we make. It simply means that entrepreneurship can be isolating, and when you have been inside your business for a long time, it can become difficult to see it clearly.
You may be too close to the problems.
You may be exhausted from constantly making decisions.
You may have spent so much time trying to keep the business alive that you stopped giving yourself permission to dream about what it could become.
An outside perspective can help you see beyond your current limitations.
The right consultant, mentor, coach, or strategist may not give you an entirely new vision. Sometimes they simply help you organize the vision already inside you. They help you put language around it. They show you how the pieces can connect and remind you that your ideas are not as unrealistic as fear may have led you to believe.
My biggest lesson from this experience was that business owners should remain open to receiving help.
Do not convince yourself that you have to know everything simply because you are the founder.
Do not reject new ideas because they did not come directly from you.
Do not allow pride to keep you stuck when guidance, strategy, or support could help you move forward.
And do not feel ashamed if someone else’s belief in your vision helps strengthen your own.
Sometimes we need confirmation.
We need to know that another person can see the potential in what we are building. We need reassurance that the vision is not only big in our minds but also capable of becoming tangible, profitable, and impactful.
The consultant did not create my vision for me. She helped me see it again.
She reminded me that SwagHer still had room to grow, evolve, and expand. More importantly, she helped me remember that I still had the ability to dream bigger for it.
Sometimes the breakthrough is not a brand-new idea.
Sometimes it is finally seeing your existing ideas clearly enough to act on them.
