The Lady Tigers reported to campus in early August and have held practices during the past few weeks to prepare for the 2026 season.
When asked was she pleased with the effort shown by her team, head volleyball coach Roselidah Obunaga said “yes, we are still working with everyone to see who fits where.”
Although it’s a little over a week before their inner-squad game and their season opener, Obunaga said the team has shown progress and continue to do the little things that should help them find success during the season.
“We are doing the normal volleyball drills and formations and brushing up in areas that need adjustments.”
Obunaga went on to add that her squad has not done anything out of the norm to get ready for their first match. “Nothing new, apart from being aggressive and strengthening our abilities until we see what our opponents have up their sleeves.”
The coach would not reveal what players have looked good in during the preseason but Amiyah Walker is a name that SSU volleyball fans have come to recognize.
As a freshman, Walker was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament team and she earned Second Team All-SIAC honors in 2025 following a performance where she was second in the conference in assists with 764. Walker played in 98 sets and 27 matches last year and concluded the season with 132 points, 90 kills, 22 aces, 288 digs and 38 blocks.
Ahead of the 2026 campaign, the Pleasant Grove, Alabama native has been named to the preseason All-SIAC First Team as a setter.
Despite the accolades, Obunaga hopes her junior player continues to improve her game. “I was to see more improvement and I hope she can win Setter off the Year.”
As a team, Savannah State is predicted to finish fifth in the conference, after finishing third during the regular season a year ago. “That’s what everyone sees,” states Obunaga. “However, it’s the performance that tells.”
SSU finished last season with a 16-11 overall record, establishing a new program record for victories for the second year in a row.
