Savannah State Update:

Savannah State University’s Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences, in partnership with Make-A-Wish Georgia, proudly welcomed 12-year-old Mason for a one-of-a-kind marine science experience designed to bring his dream to life.

Mason, who is living with cystic fibrosis, traveled from his home in Indiana to Savannah with one heartfelt wish: to become a marine biologist. On his special day, he toured SSU’s marine science Center on Livingston Avenue, where he was immersed in the vibrant world of marine science alongside students, faculty, and researchers.

Mason’s day included:

• Learning how to identify dolphin species
• A crash course in aquaponics and sustainable ecosystems
• Microscopic exploration of marine organisms
• A flight demonstration of a research drone used to monitor oyster beds
• A guided tour of the estuary aboard an SSU research vessel
“I like biology, turtles, dolphins, and going for boat rides,” Mason shared with a smile. He was accompanied by his mother, Kristen Downey, and older brother Miles, 15, who joined in the day’s activities.

The experience was coordinated by SSU marine science faculty including Drs. Tara Cox, Sue Ebanks, Christopher Hintz, Laura Treible, Dionne Hoskins-Brown, and Dwight Ebanks. The visit was held during the university’s Marine Science Coast Camp, a summer program that gives students hands-on exposure to coastal research.

Graduate students Kaila Leonard, Shaneese Mackey, Monet Murphy, James Bird, Tanesha Felton, and Ericka Estep also played a key role in sharing their expertise and passion for marine science with Mason and his family.

“Mason had a wonderful time today, and we are truly grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible,” said his mother, Kristen. “This was an unforgettable experience for him.”

The collaboration between Savannah State University and Make-A-Wish Georgia reflects SSU’s commitment to community engagement, education, and the power of science to inspire the next generation of changemakers—one wish at a time.
