Coquette Meets Cowrie Shells :

3 Fall 2025 Beauty Trends Black Women Are Flipping on TikTok

By Danielle Cox for CurlyNikki.com

I didn’t think I’d be wearing ribbons in my braids again after middle school. But here we are.

Blame it on TikTok’s obsession with the coquette aesthetic, all bows, blush, and big flirty energy. But Black creators, as usual, said, bet. And now? We’ve got the coquette braid, cowrie-core, and soft sculpting taking over timelines like they never left.

These are the Fall 2025 beauty trends we’re remixing and reclaiming, because we don’t follow aesthetics, we flip them.

1. Coquette Braids Are the New Black Girl Luxe

The vibe

Imagine your favorite protective style, cornrows, knotless, twist-outs, but with silk bows tied at the ends or around your bun. Baby pink, velvet green, burgundy satin… it’s giving “girlhood but grown.”

Why it’s trending

Softness is the new flex. And this look plays like a love letter to the girl we were and the woman we’ve become.

I wore mine with pink cowrie shells and a hoodie. That’s the vibe.

Tips

  • Secure with soft ribbon, not rubber bands (less breakage)
  • Match your ribbon to your lipstick or nails for a full moment
  • For locs or twists, tie the ribbon halfway down for a cascade look

Top product

Use a setting mousse (like Design Essentials or The Doux) to lay the look down smooth before you ribbon it up.

2. Cowrie-core Is Back, but Not How You Think

The vibe

Think less Y2K festival braid and more sacred adornment. Creators are adding cowrie shells to claw clips, glued to press-ons, even strung into necklaces and bangles again.

Why it matters

It’s not a trend, issa reclaiming. Cowries were once currency. Now they’re crowning the queens again.

Danielle says

I bought a $6 cowrie clip from a tiny TikTok shop and haven’t taken it out. It’s my whole personality now.

Try this

  • Add a single cowrie shell to your part line (braid it in or glue it on a bobby pin)
  • Accent a half-up style with a shell hair stick
  • Use clear press-ons with embedded cowries for subtle flex

3. Soft Sculpt Makeup Is Beating the Girls Silently

The vibe

This isn’t 2016 contour. It’s warm tones, radiant finishes, and cheekbones that look like you were born with them. The trick? Bronzer instead of contour, and no harsh lines.

Why it’s hot

TikTok makeup artists call it “expensive face” energy. And on Black skin? It’s chocolate glow heaven.

Danielle says

The secret is warm brown liner on the lips and eyes. It’s giving ‘90s Naomi but filtered through now.

Get the look

  • Skip contour sticks. Use a fluffy brush and warm bronzer (not gray or red!)
  • Blend into temples, cheeks, and jawline
  • Finish with a glossy brown lip oil and cream highlighter

Fall 2025 is soft. Sacred. Sentimental. And Black women? We’re wearing it like armor and art.

FAQ’s

What are coquette braids and why are they trending on TikTok?

They are classic protective styles dressed with silk ribbons and soft details. The look blends girlhood sweetness with grown woman luxe.

How do I add ribbons to braids without causing breakage?

Use satin or silk ribbon and secure over a finished braid or bun. Avoid rubber bands and tie with light tension.

Can I wear ribbons with locs and twists?

Yes. Tie the ribbon midway down for a gentle cascade or wrap the base of a bun for a polished finish.

What products help coquette braids look sleek and soft?

A lightweight setting mousse like Design Essentials or The Doux smooths flyaways and adds hold without crunch.

What is cowrie core in Black beauty right now?

It is the return of cowrie shells as sacred adornment in everyday styling. Think hair clips, press ons, necklaces, and bangles with quiet statement energy.

How can I add cowrie shells to hair safely?

Slip shells on braid ends, sew a few into cornrows, or glue one to a bobby pin and place along the part line. Keep tension low to protect edges.

Are cowrie shells appropriate for daily wear or just events?

They work for both. A single shell in a part is subtle for daytime and a shell hair stick or clip elevates a night look.

What is soft sculpt makeup for Black skin?

It is skin first radiance with warmth and dimension. Use bronzer instead of harsh contour for cheekbones that look effortless.

Which shades work best for soft sculpt on deeper tones?

Choose warm golden or rich neutral bronzers without gray cast or strong red. Blend into temples cheeks and along the jaw with a fluffy brush.

How do I finish a soft sculpt look the TikTok way?

Line lips and eyes with warm brown, add a glossy brown lip oil, and tap on cream highlighter for a quiet glow.

How do I keep these trends protective and healthy for hair?

Limit tension, moisturize ends before styling, and sleep with satin. Style should feel soft not tight.

What is the fastest way to try these trends today?

Add a ribbon to your braid ends, clip in a single cowrie at your part, sweep on warm bronzer and gloss. Instant trend flip, fully you.
