A Douglas County teacher faces 11 new charges over allegations of sexual misconduct with students at Alexander High.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A Douglas County teacher is facing more charges stemming from an investigation into allegations that she had sex with two students and sent explicit images to four others.
Maris Dever Nichols, 25, was initially arrested on two felony counts, jail records show. She is now facing 11 more charges, ranging from grooming of a minor, evidence tampering, sexual assault, and child molestation.
The original warrants accuse her of having intercourse with a student on at least two occasions, once on April 23 in a closet at Alexander High, where she teaches, and once on May 2 in a Hummer in a residential driveway.
The new charges include allegations that she had sex with a second student at a local golf club in the teen’s vehicle. The new allegations also include sending nude pics and videos to at least four others.
Nichols was a biology teacher at Alexander High School and operations manager for the school’s football team.
Parents said the allegations involving a student are already disturbing, but now fear some students may have fallen behind academically as testing, grades, and course credit deadlines approach.
After Nichols’ initial arrest, the school’s principal alerted parents about the situation.
In a statement, the Douglas County School System said it is “deeply troubled” by the allegations.
“The Douglas County School System is deeply troubled by allegations against an individual associated with one of our schools,” the district said.
“Upon learning of the alleged misconduct, the district immediately launched an investigation.”
District leaders also said they are cooperating with investigators.
“The Douglas County School System will continue to cooperate fully with state and local law enforcement. The district cannot provide additional information regarding the allegations. Any further inquiries should be directed to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office,” the statement said.
