Wellness That Matters: Black Health News & Community Care

    Key takeaways
    • Frequent urination (polyuria): kidneys excrete excess glucose, pulling water and causing increased urine volume and bathroom trips.
    • Excessive thirst (polydipsia): fluid loss causes persistent dry mouth and unquenchable thirst, leading to drinking more fluids.
    • Unexplained weight changes: unexpected loss from breaking down muscle and fat, or unexpected gain from altered energy storage.
    • Fatigue and low energy: cells deprived of usable glucose cause constant tiredness, weakness, and difficulty staying active.
    • Frequent infections: recurring skin, urinary, dental, or fungal infections that take longer to heal and may worsen.

The symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include frequent urination, fatigue, low energy, slow wound healing, and blurred vision. This condition is long-term, in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it.

Eventually, it results in elevated blood sugar levels, which can damage many organs and systems if not managed. Here is a detailed breakdown of the most common and important symptoms.

    Frequent urination (polyuria)

Frequent urination or polyuria is one of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys try to remove excess glucose through urine and pull more water out of the body, resulting in urinating more than usual and producing a large volume of urine.

How Do I Make My House Warmer in Winter? Simple Tips to Keep the Cold Out and Comfort In

    Excessive thirst (polydipsia)

Frequent urination leads to fluid loss, resulting in dehydration. Consequently, the patient suffers from persistent dry mouth, drinking more fluids than usual without relief, and strong, unquenchable thirst.

    Unexplained weight changes

One of the warning signs of Type 2 Diabetes is unexplained weight changes. Some experience unexpected weight loss because the body is unable to use glucose properly for energy, causing it to break down muscle and fat. In contrast, others gain weight due to insulin resistance and the body storing more fat. These changes should not be ignored and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

    Fatigue and low energy

Type 2 diabetes patients often experience low energy because of low glucose levels. Even though there may be plenty of sugar in the blood, the cells are essentially being deprived of fuel, leading to constant tiredness and weakness. As a result, they feel tired constantly and struggle to remain active. Furthermore, many are heavily drained throughout the day, even after getting enough sleep or rest.

    Blurred Vision

Blurred vision is a common symptom of Type 2 Diabetes. This is caused by the high blood sugar levels that affect the lens of the eye by drawing the fluid in and out, changing its shape and ability to focus well. As a result, a patient may have difficulty with blurry or fluctuating vision, cannot focus on objects well, and experience difficult in vision changes.

    Frequent infections

Frequent infections are a common symptom of Type 2 Diabetes because high blood sugar levels can weaken the immune system and reduce the body’s ability to fight off germs.

As a result, individuals with this condition are more prone to various infections, including skin infections, urinary tract infections, gum and dental infections, and fungal infections, particularly in warm and moist areas of the body.

These infections may occur more often, take longer to heal, and can become more severe if blood sugar levels are not well controlled.

    When to seek medical attention

If you notice the following symptoms, seek medical advice urgently:

    • Persistent fatigue and thirst
    • Multiple symptoms listed above
    • Frequent urination without another clear cause
    • Family history of diabetes combined with symptoms

    Conclusion

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes can develop slowly over years, which is why many people do not notice them until complications begin. Paying attention to subtle changes in thirst, urination, energy levels, and vision can make a significant difference in early detection and long-term health outcomes.
