From Campus to Classroom: Stories That Shape Education

    Key takeaways
    • Arthur “Little Co” Cofield allegedly masterminded an $11 million fraud from prison using a contraband cellphone and outside accomplices.
    • He accessed a bank account belonging to Sidney Kimmel and purchased over 6,000 American Gold Eagle coins.
    • Convicted in 2024, Cofield got a 135-month sentence for fraud and aggravated identity theft but escaped late May 2026.
    • FBI, Secret Service, and IRS are searching; reward up to $10,000 for tips leading to his capture.

It’s not every day that you see a Black man serve as the ringleader of one of the biggest heists to ever occur behind a prison wall, but that’s exactly what happened in a Georgia federal prison. You won’t believe how it all happened and where the inmate is now!

Per a new report from CBS News, the man in question is named Arthur “Little Co” Cofield, an inmate who recently escaped from a Georgia federal prison at the end of May 2026. However, as of July 1, the FBI still has no information about his whereabouts as the search for him continues.

But perhaps what’s more interesting than the fact that he escaped is the crime that landed him in prison in the first place, especially when you consider the fact that he was able to pull off this elaborate financial scheme all while behind bars.

And what was this alleged scheme, you ask? Well, it has to do with a contraband cellphone Cofield allegedly used and a complex web of deceit to steal money and commit financial fraud to the tune of $11 million. With help from folks on the outside (who are now facing impending charges of their own), Cofield was allegedly able to scam “millions of dollars” from a victim’s account, transfer it, and then convert it into “gold coins and other assets,” according to the Savannah Morning News.

Specifically, federal authorities alleged that Cofield somehow gained access to a bank account belonging to movie producer Sidney Kimmel (who produced the popular 2018 film, “Crazy Rich Asians”) and subsequently set up a purchase of “more than 6,000 American Gold Eagle coins valued at nearly $11 million.” Cofield later allegedly used that money to purchase a lavish home in the Atlanta area and chartered a private plane.

As a result, he was later convicted in 2024 on charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. He was made to serve a 135-month prison sentence, but clearly he had other plans and walked off the prison campus and into fugitive-hood.

The FBI, the Secret Service, and the IRS are just a few of the government agencies all working in tandem to figure out where Cofield may be. For any information leading to his capture, you could be rewarded up to $10,000.
