The search for missing Mississippi football player Nolan Xavier Wells has ended in tragedy after authorities located a body on Horn Island that has since been identified by his family as the 18-year-old athlete.

Wells disappeared on July 4 while spending the holiday weekend on Horn Island, a remote barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, he was last seen around 3 p.m. wearing blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and no shirt. He had reportedly become separated from his phone during the outing, making it difficult for family members and investigators to track his whereabouts.

On Monday morning, search crews discovered a body in the water near the west end of Horn Island. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the body matched Wells’ description, and his family later confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media. Officials have not yet released an official cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The search involved multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the National Park Service, and volunteers with the United Cajun Navy, who searched the island by boat, aircraft, and on foot.

Wells was a former standout football player at Ocean Springs High School and had recently begun playing wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College. As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from friends, teammates, and members of the community remembering the young athlete and offering condolences to his loved ones.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death and have asked anyone who was on Horn Island on July 4 or who may have information about his final hours to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
