66 points later, Griffin Christian has everyone’s attention at 3-0 | Friday Night Lights

Griffin Christian’s perfect start to the football season continued with another impressive performance as the Titans defeated Community Christian College 66-34 to improve to 3-0.

For head coach Cal Johnson, the undefeated record is exciting, but what has impressed him most is how his players have continued to come together as a team.

“I was really proud of the way our guys came out and competed,” Johnson said. “We had a lot of players step up and contribute, and I thought our team played with great energy and confidence. Anytime you can come away with a win like that, it takes a complete team effort.”

The Titans’ offense was nearly unstoppable, exploding for 66 points and continuing an impressive offensive start to the season.

Johnson credited his players for executing the game plan and taking advantage of opportunities when they appeared.

“Offensively, we were able to get into a good rhythm and make plays when the opportunities presented themselves,” Johnson said. “Our players executed the game plan well, and we had several guys contribute to putting points on the board.”

Despite the offensive explosion, Johnson isn’t allowing the Titans to become satisfied. Griffin Christian surrendered 34 points, and the coach knows defensive improvement will become increasingly important as the schedule gets tougher.

“We have to become more consistent with our tackling, communication and assignments,” Johnson said. “As we face tougher competition, the little mistakes become much more costly.”

Griffin Christian’s 3-0 start is another step forward for a program Johnson is attempting to build around more than wins and losses.

“Starting 3-0 is a great accomplishment, but we’re trying to build something much bigger than just a good start to a season,” Johnson said. “We want to build a program with a culture of hard work, accountability, discipline and brotherhood.”

Through three games, Johnson has also learned plenty about his players. Different Titans have stepped forward when their numbers have been called, giving the coaching staff confidence in the team’s depth and character.

“I’ve learned that this team has a lot of heart and that our players are willing to compete for each other,” Johnson said. “We’ve had different players step up in big moments.”

That mentality has been a common theme during Griffin Christian’s undefeated run. Johnson believes the Titans are becoming more confident while learning how to respond when games present adversity.

The challenge now is maintaining that momentum.

“Momentum is a great thing, but we understand that it doesn’t just happen — you have to earn it every week,” Johnson said. “To keep this going, we have to stay humble, stay hungry, continue working hard and focus on getting better every day.”

Three games into the season, Griffin Christian has done everything necessary to remain undefeated. But Johnson and his Titans understand their 3-0 record represents only the beginning.

“We’re excited about the 3-0 start,” Johnson said, “but we know there is still a lot of football left to play.”
