High school girls in Statesboro have a new chance to hit the gridiron as registration opens for the local NFL Flag football league.
Girls in the Statesboro area will have another avenue to get involved in football as Roosevelt’s Character Development Sports Mentoring prepares for its upcoming NFL Flag girls season.
The program is bringing non-contact football to local girls while putting an emphasis on more than what happens on the field. Through flag football, organizers hope athletes can develop football skills while also building confidence, teamwork and relationships with other players in the community.
The girls league is open for all girls 5th grade and up to participate.
General Manager Joseph Stuckey has been helping lead the effort to bring the NFL Flag program to Statesboro.
The league was introduced earlier this year as another opportunity for girls in the area to play the sport. Since then, organizers have continued preparing for the upcoming season and spreading the word about the program. The league comes as girls flag football continues to grow throughout Georgia.
Locally, the sport has already become part of the high school athletics landscape, giving younger players an opportunity to continue playing as they get older. Programs such as the NFL Flag league could provide another place for girls to gain experience and become more familiar with the game.
Unlike traditional tackle football, flag football is a non-contact version of the sport. Players can learn many of the same fundamentals including throwing, catching, route running, defending and understanding the game without tackling.
The goal of the program is to create an opportunity for girls to compete while also helping grow the sport locally.
Registration for the upcoming season is open. Families interested in learning more about the league or registering can contact Stuckey at 912-536-6042.
