HBCU football Week 3 scores delivered rivalry finishes, blowouts and a few long droughts that finally ended. Saturday’s slate covered 28 results across the SWAC, MEAC, CIAA and SIAC. Some games turned into routs. Others came down to the final minute, with fans holding their breath until the clock hit zero. Norfolk State Beats Hampton in Michael Vick’s First Division I Win
Norfolk State pulled away from Hampton, 42-21, in the Battle of the Bay. Jason Wonodi returned two punts for touchdowns, and kicker Marco Peery hit a school-record five field goals. The Spartans trailed 14-10 early, then ripped off 32 unanswered points. For Michael Vick, the result carried extra weight, because it was his first win over a Division I opponent as a head coach. Wonodi finished with 170 return yards on three punts in front of 17,239 fans at Dick Price Stadium. Norfolk State improved to 2-2.
Morgan State Beats Towson to End a 17-Year Drought
Morgan State won 41-26 at Towson and snapped a 17-year losing streak in the series. Keith Jenkins Jr. returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Cameron Edge threw for 209 yards and two scores. The Bears scored 17 points in both the second and fourth quarters, then handed Towson its fourth straight loss. The MEAC program reached 3-1 for the first time since 2009. Coach Damon Wilson said the win gives his team a reference point for finishing games.
Tennessee State Beats Florida A&M on a Late Touchdown
Tennessee State edged Florida A&M, 29-26, after scoring with 51 seconds left. Both teams arrived off ugly Week 2 results. The Tigers had lost 30-3 to Alabama A&M, and the Rattlers had fallen 77-7 at Miami. Saturday gave Tennessee State its first win after an 0-3 start. Meanwhile, Florida A&M had the home crowd and a chance to celebrate the rivalry’s return. Instead, the Rattlers dropped to 1-3.
Jackson State Beats Tuskegee Behind Jared Lockhart’s 376 Yards
Jackson State rolled past Tuskegee, 41-7, in the Gorden Classic. Quarterback Jared Lockhart threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns. Nate Blount IV added 149 yards from scrimmage. The Tigers shut out Tuskegee in the first half and moved to 3-0. Few HBCU football Week 3 scores looked more complete than this one.
South Carolina State Beats Furman to Stay Unbeaten
South Carolina State needed every point at Furman, winning 20-17 on the road. DJ Maultsby caught four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs also held Furman to just 53 rushing yards. The margin was thin, but a road win over an FCS program still counts, and it keeps the Bulldogs at the top of a crowded picture. They entered the week at No. 1 in the Black College Football Poll, and they left it at 4-0.
Southern Beats Louisiana Christian as Trey Holly Rushes for 200 Yards
Southern topped Louisiana Christian, 50-31, behind 365 rushing yards. Running back Trey Holly ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yard sprint. Mike Franklin also cleared 100 yards. Quarterback Christian Johnson added 170 passing yards and a 22-yard score, with assistant Fred McNair calling the plays. The Jaguars, now 2-2, matched their entire 2025 win total in four games.
Alabama A&M Beats Bowie State, 45-3
Alabama A&M followed its 30-3 win over Tennessee State with another blowout. Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV completed his first 14 passes. He finished the first half with 350 passing yards and three total touchdowns. The Bulldogs sit at 3-1, and they are getting harder to overlook.
Benedict Beats Fort Valley State, 34-33, in Overtime
Benedict survived one of the wildest finishes of the weekend, beating Fort Valley State 34-33 in overtime. Fort Valley stormed back late and forced extra time, and confusion around the scoreboard only added to the tension in the final minutes. Even so, Benedict stayed unbeaten at 3-0.
Arkansas–Pine Bluff Beats Central State, 41-35
Arkansas–Pine Bluff piled up 502 yards, including 315 on the ground, in a 41-35 home-opener win over Central State. The Golden Lions averaged 8.7 yards per play and got touchdowns from five different players. They led 41-19 before Central State scored 16 unanswered points. Head coach Alonzo Hampton pointed to the running game as the engine. UAPB held on and improved to 2-2.
Johnson C. Smith Beats Fayetteville State, 20-14
Johnson C. Smith won its third straight game, 20-14 over Fayetteville State. The Golden Bulls improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in CIAA play. Once again, they came through late against the same opponent. They entered the season with questions about repeating last year’s success. Those questions are getting quieter.
More Week 3 Results Worth Knowing
The rest of the slate carried its own drama. Stephen F. Austin beat Prairie View A&M, 31-10, and the Panthers managed just 81 rushing yards while converting five of 19 third downs. Gardner-Webb topped North Carolina Central, 44-20, after Central scored only three points in the second half. North Alabama beat Alcorn State, 38-20, and South Florida beat Delaware State, 59-17.
