Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

A few years after we launched Unruly in NYC, we started getting requests from women in DC asking us to bring our services to the District. Hundreds of you were like, “When are you coming to DC?” And honestly, we got it. Like me, a lot of you are multitaskers—spending hours in a salon chair for braids or a silk press can feel impossible. But getting your hair done at home, by one of DC’s best mobile hair stylist? While answering emails, nursing a baby, or just staying comfy in your robe? That felt doable.

So, if you’re on the hunt for beauty hacks, think of this as your guide to one of the easiest ways to take care of your hair in DC—without leaving your house. Whether you’re planning your next install, keeping up with your silk press schedule, or just want to take one thing off your plate, here’s why booking a mobile hair stylist (or an on-demand hairstylist, if you’re fancy) might be your next best move..

What’s a mobile hair stylist?

A mobile hair stylist is a licensed pro who comes to you—your apartment, your office, your hotel, wherever you are. They bring their tools and set up shop in your space. It’s convenient, private, and saves you the time and stress of salon commutes or waiting around while your stylist finishes someone else’s head.

Why women are booking at-home hair stylists in DC?

There’s something about DC that keeps us busy busy—work, traffic, community events, BRUNCH (we see you 👀), family obligations… it adds up. For a lot of us, carving out 4–6 hours for a salon visit just doesn’t make sense.

More and more women in the District are opting for mobile hair services because:

  • You save time – No commuting, no parking stress, no waiting.
  • It’s all about you – Stylists focus solely on your appointment, not five clients at once.
  • You’re in your zone – Watch TV, take a meeting, or just relax while your hair gets done.

Plus, if you’re a new mom, have mobility concerns, or just want to stay in your robe while getting a silk press, mobile styling can be a game-changer.

What services are offered?

It depends on the stylist, but you can usually find someone who offers:

  • Braids (knotless, box, cornrows, etc.)
  • Crochets
  • Blowouts and silk presses
  • Weave and weave installs and styling
  • Starter locs
  • Loc maintenance
  • Twists, updos, and bridal styles
  • Trims and treatments

Pro tip: Some stylists may include a wash, while others may ask you to prep your hair in advance. Always check their booking info.

How to book a mobile hair stylist in DC (without the stress)

If you’re new to mobile hair styling, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Look at reviews – Real talk from real clients will tell you what to expect.
  • Check their work – Instagram portfolios are clutch. You want to make sure their styling aligns with your hair type and your vibe.
  • Ask questions – Don’t be afraid to DM or text with any concerns about timing, hair prep, or what to expect. A good stylist will want you to feel ready and relaxed.

Not sure where to start? You can book a mobile hair stylist through us—we’ve already done the vetting for you.

Quick Tips Before You Book

  1. Prep your space – Clear a little room and make sure there’s good lighting and an outlet nearby.
  2. Prep your hair – Some stylists ask for clean, detangled hair; others will handle it for you. Double-check!
  3. Be ready to chill – One of the best parts? You can snack, watch TV, or even take a work call mid-style. It’s your space.

Final Word: Is on-demand hair styling worth it?

If you’re looking for a way to make your beauty routine easier, faster, and a little more luxe, the answer is 100% yes. DC is a city that moves fast, but your hair care doesn’t have to. Whether you’re a busy professional, a mom on the move, or just someone who loves convenience, mobile styling might just be your new favorite thing.

And to be honest, bringing Unruly to DC has been one of our best decisions. Not only did we find a community that really wanted more flexible hair care, we also connected with incredibly talented stylists who truly care about their clients. Stylists who don’t just deliver great results—they make you feel good, too.

It’s been a recipe for success, and we’re so excited to keep serving you.

Ready to try it for yourself? Browse the styles we offer and let the salon come to you.

✨ Bonus: Quick FAQs about on-demand styling

How much does it cost?
It depends on the style and the stylist. In general, you can expect to pay a bit more than you would at a traditional salon—anywhere from $100 to $400+, depending on the service. But remember: you’re paying for convenience, one-on-one attention, and time saved. You can view pricing for Unruly stylists here.

Do stylists bring everything they need?
Most do! (Our do!) Many bring their own tools, products, and even a styling chair if needed. Some may ask that you provide a standard chair or access to an outlet.

How should I prep for an at-home hair appointment?
Create a clean, well-lit space with an outlet nearby. Make sure your hair is prepped the way your stylist prefers—some ask for clean, detangled hair, while others include a wash. Having inspiration photos ready is always a good idea!

Are Unruly stylists licensed and professional?
Yes—all Unruly pros are vetted for experience, professionalism, and client care. If you’re booking outside of our platform, be sure to check reviews and credentials to make sure you’re in good hands.

Can I book a mobile stylist for a wedding or event in DC?
Absolutely. Many of our stylists offer services for weddings, photo shoots, and special occasions. Just be sure to book early—dates fill up fast, especially during busy seasons.
