City Offices Will Close for Independence Day Holiday

Residents are reminded to exercise caution using fireworks

SAVANNAH – City of Savannah offices and facilities will be closed Friday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Emergency services will remain open.

Sanitation services will be affected by the holiday closure. Residents can expect the following changes to their schedule:

Residential garbage and recycling collection will not be impacted by the holiday and will proceed as scheduled. Yard waste collection services will not run on Friday, July 4. Collection services will resume on Saturday, July 5.  Street sweepers will not run on Friday, July 4. Regular service will resume on Monday, July 9.

Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will both be closed on Friday, July 4. Both facilities will reopen on Saturday, July 5 for regular operation.

Residents are encouraged to refer to their annual Sanitation calendar or visit savannahga.gov/sanitation for more information.

The City reminds residents to exercise caution if using fireworks on the Fourth of July. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the only safe way to view fireworks is to attend a professional show.

According to City and State law, fireworks are allowed to be discharged between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on July 3 and July 4. All fireworks must be used and ignited by individuals 18 years of age or older.

Fireworks are not permitted in the right of way of a public road, highway, or railroad; indoors, any place where a person is deemed a trespasser; within 100 yards of an electric plant, water treatment plant, retail gasoline sales, flammable liquids, facilities engaged in processing flammable liquids, electric substations, a jail or prison, public use air facility, hospital, nursing home, or health care facility.

Fireworks are not permitted in any park, historic site, recreational site, or other property owned by the State or the City unless permitted by a controlling agency. Celebratory gunfire is dangerous and strictly prohibited.
