Savannah State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Amanda M. Kaltenberg as professor and chair of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences in the College of Sciences and Humanities.

Dr. Kaltenberg has served as a professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences since 2013. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in oceanography, fisheries, and data analysis methods. She manages the Coastal Oceanography Lab, specializing in bio-acoustic methods to study the biological and physical interactions in the oceans. She has received research grants awarded through the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The grants provide learning and research opportunities for students in the Department of Marine Sciences.

Some of Kaltenberg’ s recent research projects have focused on investigating the physical conditions of the Gulf Stream and its effects on sound-scattering layers and marine mammal predators, as well as utilizing coastal ocean observatory data to provide student internship opportunities to study the impacts of climatological events on estuaries.

“Since 2013, Dr. Kaltenberg has been a dedicated faculty member devoted to student learning and research opportunities that advance the interest of both the students and the university,” said Dr. Teresa Shakespeare, dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities. “Her passion and dedication to her students and her proven track record as an educator and researcher make her a perfect leader for our Department of Marine Sciences.”

Kaltenberg holds a bachelor’s in biology from the University of North Dakota, a master’s in Oceanography from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from Oregon State University.
