    • Upshot League held a press conference unveiling the new Savannah team’s name, logo, and head coach.
    • The team is named the Savannah Steel with a hot pink shield logo featuring the city name and nickname.
    • Coretta Brown, a former WNBA first-round pick and Georgia Southern assistant, was named head coach.
    • Local tryouts and invitations will be held; the commissioner hopes local players will join the roster.
    • League details—season start, number of games—are not finalized, but the league confirmed there will be a playoff.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Women’s professional basketball is one step closer to becoming a reality in the Hostess City.

Back in late January, Upshot League announced Savannah would be a founding member.

On Tuesday morning, the league held a press conference at Enmarket Arena to reveal the team name, logo and head coach.

The team will be called the Savannah Steel. The logo is in the shape of a shield and hot pink. Across the top of the shield is the city’s name. Underneath is the team nickname in capital letters.

The Savannah Steel, which are owned by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, named Coretta Brown the head coach.

The former WNBA first-round draft pick hails from Statesboro with really strong ties to Southeast Georgia. She graduated from Southeast Bulloch and was an assistant coach at Georgia Southern.

One of the first tasks for any coach is putting together a team. Upshot Commissioner Donna Orender said the league will issue invitations and conduct local tryouts with a date to be announced soon. She added she hopes some local players will make the squad.

There are details yet to be finalized. No decision has been made on dates of the first game of the season and how many games the four-team league play. However, the commissioner did say they will have a playoff.
