Science & Exploration: Check Out the Globe Through Research Study and Advancement

Key takeaways
  • Crew, Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers, Takuya Onishi, Kirill Peskov, splashed down off Southern California in a SpaceX capsule.
  • It marked NASA's first Pacific splashdown in 50 years and the third crewed Pacific recovery for SpaceX.
  • They had replaced astronauts stranded after Boeing Starliner thruster and helium problems; the original crew returned earlier via SpaceX.
  • During their 146-day mission aboard the ISS, they orbited Earth 2,368 times, covering over 63 million miles, then received medical checks.

Four team participants who flew to the International Spaceport Station (ISS) earlier this year to relieve two astronauts that were left stranded by a beleaguered room capsule returned to Planet on Saturday.

NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, in addition to Japan’s Takuya Onishi and Russia’s Kirill Peskov, splashed down in the Pacific off the coast of Southern The golden state on Saturday morning at 11: 33 a.m. ET in a SpaceX capsule.

It was the first Pacific splashdown for NASA in 50 years, and the 3rd for SpaceX with people on board.

NASA astronauts last splashed down in the Pacific in 1975, during the Apollo-Soyuz mission, the first crewed international room objective that entailed Americans and Soviets.

The staff introduced in March, replacing Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who were left stuck at the space station for nine months on what was meant to be a week-long objective after the Boeing Starliner they got here in experienced thruster issues and helium leaks.

NASA concluded returning them to Planet in the capsule was too high-risk, so the Starliner flew back crewless, and Wilmore and Williams got home in a SpaceX capsule in March after their replacements showed up.

Wilmore revealed his retirement after 25 years with NASA today.

“We desire this mission, our objective, to be a pointer of what people can do when we collaborate, when we discover together,” McClain stated before leaving the space station on Friday, discussing “some turbulent times in the world.”

She said she was looking forward to “doing nothing for a couple of days” as soon as back home, and her crewmates were excited about hot showers and burgers.

Earlier this year, SpaceX chose to change their splashdowns from Florida to The golden state to decrease the threat of debris dropping on populated locations.

After exiting the spacecraft, the staff obtained medical checks before being flown using helicopter to meet a NASA airplane bound for Houston.

“Overall, the goal went great, pleased to have the staff back,” Steve Stich, supervisor of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, claimed in an interview after splashdown. “SpaceX did a terrific task of recuperating the staff once more on the West Coast.”

Dina Contella, replacement supervisor for NASA’s International Spaceport station program, included that she was “quite satisfied to see the Staff 10 group back on Earth. They looked fantastic, and they are doing great.”
