From Campus to Classroom: Stories That Shape Education

    Key takeaways
    • Katreshia Louis-Verrett returns to North Carolina A&T with six years as senior woman administrator, overseeing eight sports and deputy Title IX responsibilities.
    • Katreshia Louis-Verrett brings FBS-level experience from her role as deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator at UAB, expanding program scale expertise.
    • Her compliance background and law degree from Southern University Law Center suit NCAA scrutiny as she inherits North Carolina A&T amid conference realignment.

Katreshia Louis-Verrett North Carolina A&T athletic director talks have reportedly reached the finish line. Multiple sources tell HBCU Gameday that North Carolina A&T is expected to name Louis-Verrett as its next director of athletics. A formal announcement hasn’t happened yet. The university has not confirmed anything publicly. Still, the sourcing suggests this move is close to official.

Katreshia Louis-Verrett North Carolina A&T Athletic Director Move Would Be a Homecoming

If finalized, the hire would bring Louis-Verrett back to Greensboro. She spent six years there as senior woman administrator before leaving for UAB in 2017. During that stretch, she oversaw eight sports programs at North Carolina A&T. She also served as deputy Title IX coordinator. On top of that, she advised the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and worked with the faculty athletics representative on NCAA reporting. That mix gave her a deep understanding of how the department actually runs.

At UAB, Louis-Verrett currently serves as deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator. That role has kept her close to Football Bowl Subdivision-level operations. It’s a different scale than most HBCU athletic departments handle. Add her earlier North Carolina A&T experience, and she’d arrive with a rare mix. She knows HBCU athletics from the inside, and she’s also spent years inside a Power Conference-adjacent program.

A Résumé Built Across Two Very Different Programs

Before her first stint at North Carolina A&T, Louis-Verrett worked at Georgia Tech from 2006 through 2011. She spent her final five years there as assistant director of compliance. That compliance background matters. NCAA infractions cases have become a growing headache across HBCU athletics this year. Her law degree adds another layer to that expertise. She earned it from Southern University Law Center in 2004.

Louis-Verrett also has an athletic background of her own. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Miami in 2000. A master’s in sport administration from the same school followed shortly after. While there, she competed for four years on Miami’s track and field team. The Hurricanes captured consecutive Big East championships in 1998 and 1999 during her time on the roster. That playing experience adds another layer to her legal and compliance credentials.

    What She’d Be Inheriting

Louis-Verrett would succeed Earl Hilton, who stepped down earlier this year. Hilton led North Carolina A&T’s athletic department for 15 years. His tenure included four Celebration Bowl championships in HBCU football, among the most successful runs of any HBCU athletic department in recent memory. That success sets a high bar. It also means Louis-Verrett would take over a department already accustomed to winning at a national level.

She’d also inherit a department navigating conference realignment. North Carolina A&T now competes primarily in the Coastal Athletic Association, a jump from its prior conference home. Meanwhile, North Carolina A&T’s centennial homecoming celebration is already generating major attention this fall. Hotel demand and visitor traffic are surging across Greensboro ahead of it. Whoever takes the AD job will step directly into that spotlight.

A Broader Pattern Across HBCU Athletics

Louis-Verrett’s expected hire fits a larger trend. HBCUs are increasingly recruiting administrators with both HBCU roots and Power Conference-level experience. As programs face growing scrutiny from the NCAA and rising competition for talent, that combination has become increasingly valuable. According to ClutchPoints’ coverage of the expected hire, Louis-Verrett would inherit one of the most successful athletic departments in HBCU sports if the move becomes official.

According to HBCU Gameday’s original reporting on the search, North Carolina A&T has been reached for comment but hasn’t confirmed the hire. For now, the Katreshia Louis-Verrett North Carolina A&T athletic director story remains speculation backed by strong sourcing. Expect a formal announcement soon, especially with the centennial homecoming approaching and a new athletic era waiting to begin.
