About 6% of adults, or 15 million people, are currently using the drug, according to a KFF survey. Although more than 40% of the respondents use Ozempic for medical purposes, 2 in 5 take it for weight loss. But, does it help in weight loss. This article examines the question, “How does Ozempic work for weight loss?”

How Does Ozempic Work for Weight Loss?

Ozempic contains semaglutide, a component that the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved in 2017, which helps treat type 2 diabetes. However, in recent years, it’s been widely promoted as a weight-loss drug, so here’s how it works.

    • Semaglutide: The active ingredient that mimics a hormone called GLP-1.
    • Appetite Control: Signals the brain that you’re full, reducing hunger.
    • Slows Digestion: Delays gastric emptying, making you feel full longer.
    • Combined Benefits: Better blood sugar control and gradual weight loss.

People who have used Ozempic report noticeable weight loss because it controls appetite and slows digestion. The semaglutide in Ozempic tells the brain when you’re full, so you stop eating. It does this by mimicking the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone, a natural hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar and weight loss. Additionally, GLP-1 stimulates insulin, the hormone responsible for lowering blood sugar.

When it comes to weight loss, it performs a process known as gastric emptying. When eating, the food passes from your stomach to your intestines. However, Ozempic slows does this process, making you satiated, the feeling of fullness.
