Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Holiday meals anchor memory and tradition, giving the menu emotional warmth and familial resonance.
    • The Thanksgiving menu is intentional; dishes like corn ribs balance crisp exterior and juicy interior.
    • Signature wings channel Korean fried chicken flavors with black garlic buffalo; the kitchen accommodates gluten and dairy-free diets.
    • Responsible sourcing underpins dining: FOWL partners with The Ethical Butcher and Rare Breed Meats, offering a grounded, shareable experience.

Located in the heart of Piccadilly, FOWL offers festive dining rooted in British and American comfort food traditions. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, it’s a restaurant where flavour, memory, and soul meet in central London.

Food Memories and the Meaning of Holiday Meals

Food has a way of anchoring us. Certain dishes and drinks can transport you instantly—to a kitchen, a dining table, a particular time in your life. For me, holiday meals have always carried that weight. I grew up spending every Thanksgiving at my grandparents’ house, whether that was in Colorado or Alabama. The spread was generous and familiar—classic dishes you’d expect in African-American households, made from recipes passed down and learned by watching rather than reading.

Those traditions stayed with me. My husband and I have carried them into our own home over the years, but this Thanksgiving looked a little different. Travel meant time was tight, and when we were invited to experience FOWL’s Thanksgiving menu, curiosity took the lead. I was genuinely interested in how American Thanksgiving classics might be interpreted through a British lens—and whether they’d still feel like home.

A Thanksgiving Menu That Understood the Assignment

From the very first course, it was clear the kitchen had approached the menu with intention. The corn ribs—seasoned with kombu and finished with lime—were beautifully done. Corn can be unforgiving; it’s easy to overcook or under-season.

Growing up with a father who was a true grill master, I learned early how quickly things can go wrong. These struck the balance—crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and properly seasoned. Each bite delivered layers of flavour that reminded you corn doesn’t need much, just care.

When Fried Chicken Is Done Right

The FOWL signature wings followed, leaning into a Korean fried chicken-style approach with black garlic buffalo notes and a bonito buttermilk coating. As someone who’s gluten and dairy-free, I was especially impressed by how accommodating the team were—retaining that signature crunch and depth of flavour without compromise.

This wasn’t fried chicken for the sake of it. You could taste the garlic, the black pepper, the seasoning building with each bite. It was the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-conversation because you need a second to take it in—and one we’d happily return for on its own.

Comfort, Balance, and the Supporting Cast

Alongside this came a pumpkin ranch salad with maple dressing, blue cheese, and candied pecans—blue cheese omitted for me without fuss. The maple dressing carried a subtle kick that played beautifully against the sweetness of the pecans, making it feel seasonal without tipping into cliché.

The main event was smoked rotisserie chicken, served with candied yams, cranberry sauce, Brussels sprouts, glazed skillet cornbread, and a chicken and bacon gravy. While the chicken itself was good, it didn’t quite reach the same depth of flavour as the wings—we would have loved a longer marinade or deeper smoke. That said, the sides more than delivered.

    FOWL Rotisserie Chicken

The candied yams were different from my grandmother’s—less syrupy, more restrained—but still deeply comforting. The cranberry sauce was a standout—not the jellied version many of us grew up with, but rich, well-balanced, and something we immediately wanted to dip everything into. The Brussels sprouts were exactly how they should be—crispy-edged, tender inside, and seasoned with confidence. We could’ve happily ordered another portion.

    Dessert, Tradition, and Small Surprises

Dessert brought things full circle. Omo was served a spiced pumpkin pie with ice cream—a departure from the sweet potato pie we’re used to at home, but one he loved. The spice blend was gentle but present—nutmeg, clove, cinnamon—and the pastry was light with just enough crisp to give structure before melting into the filling.

It was thoughtful, balanced, and comforting—the kind of dessert that doesn’t try to steal the show, but quietly earns its place.

    Sustainability Without the Shouting

What also stayed with me was FOWL’s approach to sustainability. The birds are responsibly sourced from The Ethical Butcher and Rare Breed Meats and pasture-raised for longer than standard, with a clear ‘beak to feet’ philosophy guiding the menu. In a moment where it’s not always easy to know where our food comes from, there’s something grounding about eating somewhere that takes that responsibility seriously—without needing to shout about it.

From Thanksgiving to Christmas—Why FOWL Works Year-Round

Although Thanksgiving has passed, FOWL is very much a year-round destination. The same confidence and care that shaped their Thanksgiving menu carries through the rest of their offering—making it an easy recommendation whether you’re dining casually or marking an occasion. With festive menus planned for the Christmas season and New Year’s celebrations, it’s well worth bookmarking if you’re travelling to London or looking for a central spot that delivers flavour, warmth, and atmosphere without feeling forced.

    A Meal Worth Sharing

By the end of the meal, I realised what lingered most wasn’t just the flavours—it was the feeling. The kind that makes you wish you could gather the people who taught you what good food means and sit them at the same table. That, to me, is always the true measure of a memorable dining experience—when a meal feels worth sharing. If my grandmother ever had the chance to visit London, FOWL is a restaurant I’d love to take her to. Not because it tries to replicate tradition, but because it understands it—honouring comfort, care, and flavour in a way that feels deeply familiar, even far from home.
