Game On: Latest in Gaming News, Reviews & Industry Buzz

    Key takeaways
    • Some games returned to Steam after removal, notably Chainsaw Warrior after Auroch Digital lost rights.
    • Old favorites like Dawn of War are included in the sale, so classic titles get discounts even if not newly added.
    • Expect dated visuals and controls on nearly 30 years old games; retro charm is rewarding but requires patience.
    • Cult favorite Fire Warrior reportedly plays great on Steam Deck after customizing controls; user shared a controller profile.

The Warhammer Classics Collection, a Steam Store event currently underway courtesy of Warhammer and SNEG, has brought with it a collection of beloved retro games to the PC store for the first time. This includes a particular cult classic which was devilishly hard to get working previously.

This collection, coinciding with a sale on the range of games up for grabs, includes 1995 RTS Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, turn-based tactics oldie Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Gate, Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000, and the ever-quirky Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior, among others.

You can watch the Warhammer Classics Collection trailer here!Watch on YouTube

There are also games returning to Steam, having been removed from the storefront over the years. An example being Chainsaw Warrior, which was removed from the platform after Auroch Digital lost the rights to the game back in 2021.

Games like the original Dawn of War, which have been on Steam for some time, are also included in the event. While, obviously, they aren’t part of the big surprise, they do benefit from the Warhammer Classics sale. So if you’ve not got your Blood Bowl on, or battled over the Kurava system, now’s a good time to do so.

It’s worth noting that, while these old games getting a new home on Steam is lovely news, some of them are nearly 30 years old, so prepare for some dated visuals or controls before you delve in. Still, for any retro-heads out there gold can be found here. Fire Warrior is a personal favourite of my childhood, one of the rare Warhammer games where you don’t play as a looming Space Marine.

While far from perfect, it does apparently make for a great Steam Deck game. As user Ingueferroque wrote: “Despite the lack of native gamepad support, the game plays great on Steam Deck once you customize the controls using SteamOS. I shared a controller profile titled ‘Steam Deck’ if you want to try it. This makes the game very playable. I’m happy this game is on Steam now!”

Are there any retro Warhammer games worth jumping into again? Let us know if they’re included in this new collection, or if they’ve yet to get any modern love.
