    Key takeaways
    • In her acceptance speech, Teyana Taylor centered Black girls, urging brown girls that our softness is not a liability and to claim space.
    • She founded The Aunties, directing and producing work to become access and resources, encouraging creatives to invest in themselves and pursue bold visions.

Multihyphenate Teyana Taylor can now add Golden Globe winner to her growing list of accolades.

The “Bed of Roses” singer took home her first major acting award Sunday (January 11) night, winning Best Supporting Female Actor in a Motion Picture for her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in “One Battle After Another.” It marks the biggest acting honor of her career to date, arriving at a moment that feels both earned and intentional as Taylor continues to expand her creative work as a singer, director, choreographer, producer, and actress.

Notably, Taylor used her acceptance speech to center Black girls not as a footnote, but as the heart of the room.

“To my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight,” she said, “our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter, and our dreams deserve space.”

The message echoed Taylor’s long-standing commitment to building space for creativity on her own terms. She directed, wrote, and starred in the visuals for her recent music project “Escape Room,” a futuristic noir romance released under her all-female production company, The Aunties.

“Because I didn’t have the access and the resources, I wanted to become the access and the resources for creatives to feel safe and to know that nothing is impossible,” she said on a recent podcast while sharing the vision behind creating her own production house. “Never be afraid to invest in yourself.”

That same fearlessness showed up on the red carpet. Known for her signature abs, Taylor opted instead for a custom black Schiaparelli gown that delivered sculptural elegance from the front and playful surprise from behind. A rhinestone-embellished thong topped with a bow peeked out that Taylor described as a “party in the back.”

She finished the look with a softly feathered, curled pixie cut by celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms, keeping the overall effect polished, confident, and distinctly her.

Between the performance, the words, and the fashion, Taylor’s Golden Globe win felt less like a breakthrough and more like a confirmation. And if this moment is any indication, there is much more of her vision still to come, as she said, “purpose always finds it moment.”
